Fit a grab rail by the bath or toilet to a lath and plaster wall

Fit a grab rail safely into solid timber behind a lath and plaster bathroom wall, checking for pipes, cables and hidden studs first.

GR-01Gather your tools and protect the roomLay a dust sheet under the work area and open a window — lath and plaster gives off fine, old plaster dust when drilled. Get everything together before you start: it's a fiddly job and you don't want wet hands on a box of screws halfway through.

GR-02Mark the rail position and check it's practicalHold the rail in place and mark a level line with a pencil at a height that's comfortable to grip — around 800-900mm above the bath or toilet floor level is typical, but let the person using it try the position first. Use a spirit level so the rail isn't sloping, and check it doesn't foul the taps, bath edge or toilet cistern.

GR-03Work out exactly what's behind the wallA lath and plaster wall has timber studs behind it, usually 400-600mm apart, with thin wooden laths nailed across them and plaster keyed into the gaps. Tap along the wall — a dull, solid thump usually means a stud, a hollow rattle means you're over the laths only. Some bathroom partitions are actually plasterboard on timber or metal studs, or a solid brick or block wall, so don't assume — a magnet or stud detector run along the wall will pick up screw heads in a line if it's a stud wall, and a small pilot hole will tell you more: timber dust means a wooden stud, fine grey swarf means a metal one, and soft crumbly dust with no resistance means you're only in plaster and lath.

GR-04Check for pipes and cables, and know how to stop themBathrooms are full of hidden pipework, and cables can run almost anywhere — not just in the usual 'safe zones'. Run a detector over the marked area, but still assume something could be there even if it shows nothing, because detectors miss deep cables, metal-backed board, and anything in conduit. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and turn the water off at the stopcock before you drill.
GR-05Drill test holes to find solid timberAt each marked fixing point, drill a small 3mm pilot hole through the plaster and lath. Push a bit of wire or a long screw in gently — if it stops solid within 15-20mm you've likely hit a stud; if it goes straight through into a void, you're between studs and that point won't hold a grab rail on its own. Move the rail slightly, or plan to fit a plywood pattress across two studs instead — never rely on plaster and lath alone to carry someone's weight.

GR-06Choose the right fixing for what you've foundInto solid timber studs behind lath and plaster, use long wood screws (60-75mm) that pass through the plaster and lath and bite at least 30mm into the stud. If you meet solid brick or block instead, drill to the size stated on the wall plug packet, fit the plug fully, then screw in. If the wall is plasterboard on metal studs, never use a wood screw or plastic plug — a self-drilling metal-stud fixing is the only thing that will hold, and even then a metal stud alone will not carry a grab rail safely; you need a timber noggin or pattress fitted between the studs, or a through-fixing to masonry. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, a standard plasterboard fixing is not enough for a load-bearing rail — use a fixing long enough to pass through the board, the adhesive dab gap (often 20-40mm), and into the masonry behind.

KNOW THE RULES

There's no specific Building Regulation covering grab rail fixings in an existing home, but the fixing must be strong enough to take a person's full weight and sudden pulling force — this is a genuine safety issue, not just good practice.

GR-07Drill the final fixing holesDrill each hole at the size and depth needed for the fixing you've chosen, going slowly through the plaster and lath first so the drill doesn't wander or crack the plaster. Blow or vacuum the dust out of each hole before fitting a plug or anchor, so it seats properly.

GR-08Mount the rail and check it's levelHold the rail against the wall, line it up with your marks, and drive in the screws through the baseplate fixing holes. Check the rail with a spirit level as you tighten, and make sure every screw is fully home — a loose fixing on one side puts all the load on the others.

GR-09Test the fixing before anyone relies on itPush and pull firmly on the rail in the direction it will actually be used — downward and outward, as if getting up from the bath. It should not move, creak, or flex away from the wall. If it does, stop using it and go back to Step 6 — you may have missed the stud or masonry.
GR-10Seal around the fixing and clear upRun a thin bead of bathroom sealant around the edge of the baseplate where it meets the wall, to stop water tracking behind the plaster and rotting the timber laths or stud. Wipe away dust, fold up the dust sheet, and leave the sealant to cure for the time stated on the tube before the rail gets wet.
