Fit a grab rail by the bath or toilet to a timber stud wall

Fit a secure grab rail near the bath or toilet, with the right fixing for whatever is behind your bathroom wall.

GR-01Gather your tools and check the stopcockGet everything together before you start: grab rail, drill, spirit level, tape measure, pencil, dust sheet, and a cable/pipe detector. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you ever hit a pipe. Do this now, not after you've started drilling.

GR-02Decide where the rail goesHold the rail in place and check it's a comfortable, useful grip for the person using it. Most bath and toilet rails go somewhere around 800-1000mm above the floor, but there's no fixed rule for your own home — fit it where it actually helps. Mark the two end fixing points with a pencil dot, using masking tape over tiles so the mark shows up and doesn't scratch the glaze.

GR-03Work out what's behind the wallTap the wall — a dull thud usually means solid brick or block, a hollow sound means a stud wall or dot-and-dab plasterboard. Run a stud detector or magnet across the marked area to find timber studs (the magnet grabs the screw heads holding the plasterboard on). If you find metal, not timber, screw heads, you likely have metal studs — very common in flats, new builds, and anything refitted since the 1990s. Drill one small 3mm pilot hole at a fixing point: pale wood dust means timber, fine grey swarf means metal, and a soft double layer with an air gap behind it usually means dot-and-dab. Older houses with a bouncy, uneven wall surface and horizontal wooden strips visible in the pilot hole are lath and plaster — this is old and fragile, so treat it carefully.

GR-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a bathroom wall, not just in the 'safe zones'. Use your detector, but still treat the wall as if something is there until you prove otherwise — detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and metal stud frames confuse cheap detectors further. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and make sure you know the stopcock works before cutting into anything that could carry water.
GR-05Check you have a solid fixing pointA grab rail takes a real pulling and twisting load from someone's full body weight, so it needs a genuinely solid fixing — not just a toggle in plasterboard on its own. On a timber stud wall, aim to fix directly into the centre of a stud at both ends. On a metal stud wall or where there's no timber behind the marked spot, you'll usually need to add a timber noggin between the studs, or fix through to the masonry behind on a dot-and-dab wall. Skipping this step is the most common reason grab rails fail.
GR-06Fit a noggin if there's no solid timber behind the fixing pointsIf you need a noggin, cut a small access hole in the plasterboard between the studs, no bigger than needed to work in. Screw a length of 100x50mm timber horizontally between the studs at the right height, using two 75mm woodscrews into each stud end. Patch the plasterboard with an offcut and a skim of filler, and let it dry fully before you fix the rail through it.

GR-07Drill and fix — method depends on your wallSolid brick or block: drill with a masonry bit sized to your wall plug (usually 8mm for an 8mm plug), to a depth of at least 50mm, and use a heavy-duty plug with a coach screw or bolt. Timber stud: drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and use a 75mm coach screw or heavy woodscrew, never a plain wall plug. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud anchor or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load — never a plastic plug or an ordinary woodscrew, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel. Dot-and-dab: drill through the plasterboard and the air gap into the solid masonry behind, using a fixing long enough to bridge the gap (commonly 75-100mm) — a frame fixing or resin anchor works well here. Lath and plaster: locate a timber lath or the stud behind it and fix into that, using a shorter pilot hole and light hand pressure so you don't crack the old plaster.

GR-08Fit the rail and check it's levelHold the rail against the fixing points, check it's level, then screw or bolt it in place through the pre-drilled holes. Tighten fully but don't overtighten plastic plugs, as they can crack. Wipe away any drilling dust or debris from the tiles and floor as you go.

GR-09Seal the edges if the rail is near waterIf the rail sits close to the bath, shower or basin, run a thin bead of bathroom sealant around the base plates where they meet the wall. This stops water tracking behind the rail and into the wall or floor below.

GR-10Test it properly before you trust itPull and push the rail hard in every direction it will actually be used — downward, sideways, and away from the wall. It should not move, flex, or make a cracking sound. If anything shifts, stop using it and add a proper fixing point (a noggin or a fixing into masonry) before it's used again.
GR-11Tidy upVacuum up all drilling dust, especially from grout lines and the bath itself. Wipe down tiles and surfaces, and check the sealant has a clean, smooth finish once it's set.
