Fit a kitchen utensil rail to a timber stud wall

Fit a lightweight utensil rail to a timber stud wall by screwing brackets straight into stud centres, level and secure.

UR-01Plan the rail positionDecide the height and length of the rail, keeping it clear of the hob and any splashback tiles. Mark a level line with a pencil and spirit level where the top of the rail will sit. Hold the rail against the wall to check hooks won't clash with cupboards or the extractor.

UR-02Confirm you're dealing with timber studs, not metalRun a stud detector along the wall and follow the line of existing screw heads if the wall has been fixed to before — timber studs usually sit at 400mm or 600mm centres. Tap gently: a dull thud means a stud, a hollow sound means plasterboard between studs. Drill a small 2mm pilot hole at the stud centre — timber dust means a wood stud, fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud, so stop and switch fixings if you see swarf.

UR-03Mark the bracket fixing pointsTransfer the stud centres onto your level line using the pencil. Most utensil rails have two or three brackets — try to land at least the end brackets on studs. If a bracket falls between studs, note it now; you'll need a hollow-wall fixing rated for the load there instead of a wood screw.
UR-04Drill and fix the bracketsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a kitchen wall, especially near sockets and the sink. Use your detector, then still treat the wall as live until proven otherwise — find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns before you start, and if there's any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling. For a timber stud, drill a 2mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive in a wood screw. For a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or hollow-wall toggle rated for the wall thickness — never a plastic wall plug or ordinary wood screw, as these strip straight through 0.5mm steel. For any bracket landing between studs on plasterboard, fit a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for at least double the loaded weight, since a rail loaded with pans pulls outward as well as down.

UR-05Fit the rail to the bracketsClip or screw the rail onto the fitted brackets, following the kit's instructions. Check the rail is level and give it a firm tug to make sure every fixing feels solid.

UR-06Add hooks and load-testHang the S-hooks or clip-hooks supplied with the kit along the rail. Load it with a couple of heavier pans first and check nothing shifts or the wall creaks before adding everything else.

UR-07Tidy upVacuum any drill dust or metal swarf from the worktop and floor. Wipe down the wall and worktop, and dispose of packaging. Put your detector and tools away in a dry spot.
