AB-02Check for pipes and cables, and know your shut-offsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones'. Run your detector over the area, but still assume something could be there and drill carefully to prove it isn't — detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector even more. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry it.
