Fit a robe hook to a solid brick or block wall

Mark, drill and plug a solid wall, then fix a robe hook securely in one short session.

RH-01Gather your tools and materialsGet everything together before you start: robe hook, wall plugs and screws, a drill with masonry bit, spirit level, tape measure and pencil. If the wall is tiled, you'll also need a tile bit. Lay a dust sheet below the work area to catch masonry dust.

RH-02Choose and mark the positionPick a height that works for you, usually around 1400-1600mm from the floor. Check there's room for the door or towel to swing clear. Use a spirit level to mark the hole centre accurately, especially if you're fitting a pair of hooks.

RH-03Check for cables and pipes, and find your stopcockCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, including behind tiles near a bath or basin. Use a detector, but still treat the wall as if something is there until you've drilled a shallow test hole and checked. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and make sure it turns before you start. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and turn off the water at the stopcock before drilling near any pipework.

RH-04Drill the fixing holeIf the wall is tiled, start with a tile bit at low speed to get through the glaze without cracking it, then switch to a masonry bit sized to your plug, usually 6mm. Mark the depth on the bit with tape so you drill about 5mm deeper than the plug length. Drill in short bursts, easing off if you hit resistance or feel warm dust building up.

RH-05Insert the wall plugBlow or brush the dust out of the hole so the plug seats properly. Push the plug in until it's flush with the wall surface. If it won't go in by hand, tap it gently with a hammer, don't force it in crooked.

RH-06Fix the hook and test itHold the hook in place and drive the screw through its baseplate into the plug. Don't overtighten, a snug fit is enough, over-driving can crack tiles or split the plug. Once fitted, give the hook a firm downward tug to check it's solid before hanging anything heavy on it.

RH-07Clean upVacuum up any masonry or tile dust from the floor and windowsill. Wipe the wall down with a damp cloth to remove dust residue. Fold away the dust sheet and dispose of any packaging.
