Fit a tool storage rail to a metal stud wall

Fit a straight, level tool rail across a stud wall, using the right fixing for whatever is actually behind the plasterboard.

TR-01Plan the rail position and lengthDecide the height for the rail — usually 1000-1300mm from the floor so hooks sit at a useful reach. Measure the wall and choose a rail length that will land on at least two, ideally three, fixing points. Mark a level line in pencil using a spirit level, not by eye.

TR-02Work out what's actually behind the wallRun a stud detector along your pencil line to find stud centres, then double-check with a magnet — it will snap onto the screw heads holding plasterboard to a metal stud. Tap the wall: a dull thud means a stud or solid backing, a hollow sound means fresh air. Drill a 2mm pilot hole at a mark; timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means metal, and thick paste or brick dust means dot-and-dab or solid masonry.

TR-03Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsDetectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or run outside the normal safe zones — and a metal stud frame will confuse a cheap detector even more. Treat every hole as if something could be there until you have proved otherwise. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near sockets or lights, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into a wall that could carry pipework.
TR-04Mark the fixing points across the studsMetal stud walls typically have studs every 400-600mm — mark each one along your level line where it crosses a rail hole. Where a rail hole falls between studs, mark it anyway; you'll fix that point differently in the next step. Hold the rail up to check the marks line up with its screw holes before drilling anything.
TR-05Drill and fit the correct fixing for each pointInto a metal stud: drill a small pilot hole and use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load — never a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, which will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Into a timber stud: drill a 3mm pilot hole and drive a wood screw into the centre of the stud. Onto plasterboard between studs with no stud reachable: use a toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the rail's loaded weight, not a lightweight picture-hook fixing. Onto dot-and-dab: use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard and dab and bite into the masonry behind, typically 60-75mm, with a matching plug. Onto solid brick or block: drill with a 6mm masonry bit to the plug's stated depth, insert a Rawlplug, then screw. If the rail will carry heavy tools that pull forward as they're lifted off, don't rely on plasterboard toggles alone — fix into every available stud, or fit a timber noggin or pattress behind the board first.

TR-06Hang the rail and check it's secureLift the rail onto the fixings and check it with the spirit level again — a rail that's out by even a few millimetres will look wrong once tools are hanging. Tighten every fixing fully. Give the rail a firm downward and outward pull by hand to test it before trusting it with tools.
TR-07Load the rail and give it a final checkHang your heaviest tools first and watch the rail for any sag or movement over the next few minutes. If any fixing point feels loose or the rail flexes, take the load off and add an extra fixing rather than leaving it as it is.
TR-08Tidy upVacuum drilling dust and swarf from the floor and skirting, and wipe the wall down. Bin offcuts and packaging, and store any spare fixings in a labelled bag for next time.
