Fit a tool storage rail to a lath and plaster wall safely, finding solid timber fixings and avoiding hidden pipes and cables.

TR-01Plan the job and gather your toolsDecide how long a run of wall you need and check the rail kit's fixing spacing against your tool collection. Clear the area, lay down a dust sheet, and unpack the rail so you can check all brackets and screws are included. Lath and plaster crumbles more easily than modern plasterboard, so work slowly and expect some plaster dust even with care.

TR-02Find out what's behind the plasterLath and plaster is timber laths nailed to timber studs (or ceiling joists) under old lime plaster, so you're always looking for timber, never a metal stud — metal stud partitions came along decades after lath and plaster went out of use. Run a detector along the wall to find the studs, then check your reading against a vertical line of nail or screw heads (often visible faintly through the plaster or skirting fixings above and below). Tapping the wall gives a duller sound over studs and a hollower sound between them, but lath and plaster sounds hollow everywhere, so don't rely on tapping alone — confirm each fixing point with a small pilot hole and check for timber dust before committing to a full-size hole.

TR-03Check for pipes and cables before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones' — a detector helps, but it can miss cables that are deep, boxed in metal conduit, or behind old metal lath fixings, so always drill as if something is there until you've proved otherwise. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind a fixing point, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and don't start until you're confident.
TR-04Mark and level the fixing pointsHold the rail at your chosen height and mark the top edge lightly in pencil. Use a spirit level to draw a level line along the wall, then mark each fixing hole position on the line, matching them to the stud positions you found in step 2 wherever possible. Getting the line level now saves a wonky rail later — lath and plaster walls are rarely perfectly flat, so trust the level, not the wall.

TR-05Fix into the timber studsFor any fixing point that lines up with a stud, drill a pilot hole through the plaster, lath and into the timber — timber dust from the hole confirms you've hit solid wood. Drill to a depth that clears the plaster and lath (roughly 15-20mm) plus at least 30mm into the stud. Use a wood screw long enough to bite at least 30mm into solid timber beyond the lath and plaster thickness, driven into the centre of the stud, not the edge.

TR-06Fix into lath and plaster between the studsIf a fixing point falls between studs, you've only got thin timber laths and old lime plaster to work with — a plain screw or plastic wall plug has nothing solid to grip and will pull straight out, and can crack the surrounding plaster. Use a proper hollow-wall toggle fixing rated for the loaded weight of the rail plus tools, sized to suit the wall thickness. Where possible, reposition the fixing point a few centimetres to land on a stud instead — it's a much stronger fix for a rail that will carry real weight.

TR-07Fix into solid masonry, if that's what you findSome lath and plaster runs sit directly over a solid brick chimney breast rather than a timber stud wall — if your pilot hole brings out reddish brick dust instead of timber dust, you're into masonry. Drill a 7mm hole to 40mm depth, insert a 6mm wall plug rated for the load, and drive in a matching screw. This gives a stronger fix than any stud-wall toggle, so use it whenever the wall behind is genuinely solid.

TR-08Fit the rail and check it's trueOffer the rail up to the marked line and drive the fixings in through the rail's mounting holes, checking the spirit level again as you go. Don't fully tighten every screw until all fixings are in place, then snug them all down evenly. Give the rail a firm push and pull by hand before hanging anything on it.

TR-09Load test and tidy upHang your heaviest tool first and leave it for a few minutes, checking the fixings haven't moved or the plaster hasn't started to crack around them. Vacuum up plaster dust from the floor and skirting, and wipe down the wall below the rail. Keep spare fixings and the instructions in case you need to add or move a bracket later.
