TR-02Mark the fixing holes and check for hazardsHold the template or bracket against the wall, level it, and mark the fixing centres with a pencil. Before you drill, run a detector over the marked spots — but don't trust it completely. Cables and pipes can run almost anywhere, and detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or outside the normal safe zones near sockets and switches. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
