Fit a towel rail to a timber stud wall

Fit a towel rail to a stud wall safely, working out the wall type first and using the correct fixing for it.

AB-01Gather your tools and materialsGet everything together before you start: towel rail kit, detector, drill, spirit level, tape measure and pencil. Lay a dust sheet below the work area to catch drilling debris. Check the rail kit for its fixings, but plan to swap these for the right type once you know what's behind the wall.

AB-02Choose the position and mark it upHold the rail against the wall at a comfortable height, usually 1000-1200mm from the floor, and check it clears the bath, basin or towel drop below. Mark the centre line with a pencil, then use the spirit level to draw a level horizontal line for the fixing holes. Measure the hole centres from the rail or bracket itself rather than guessing.

AB-03Work out what's behind the wallRun a detector or magnet along the marked line to find studs. A magnet sticking every 400-600mm shows screw heads on plasterboard studwork; a hollow sound between those points confirms a stud wall rather than solid masonry. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: pale, fine dust means plasterboard or dot-and-dab, sawdust-like shavings mean you have hit timber, and bright metal swarf means a metal stud. If the wall sounds solid all over with no hollow spots, you likely have brick, block, or old lath and plaster (which often sounds slightly hollow but crumbles differently under the drill).

AB-04Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones', so always use a detector before drilling — then still assume something could be there and drill carefully. Detectors can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or confused by a metal stud frame. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit first, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry it.
AB-05Fixing method: solid brick or blockDrill with a masonry bit sized to match your wall plug, typically 6mm or 8mm, to a depth of at least 40mm. Insert a matching wall plug flush with the surface, then drive in a screw long enough to bite at least 35mm into the masonry behind the plug. This gives a strong fixing that will hold the full weight of a towel rail.

AB-06Fixing method: plasterboard on timber studsWhere your marks land on a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole through the plasterboard into the centre of the stud. Drive a wood screw, at least 50mm long, straight through the board and into the timber. This is the strongest fixing you can get on a stud wall, so use it wherever possible for the main weight-bearing points.

AB-07Fixing method: plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — it will strip straight through the 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud screw driven straight into the stud, or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor if you're fixing between studs into the plasterboard alone. A metal stud will not hold anything heavy or anything that pulls away from the wall in use, like a towel rail with a rail arm — if that's your fixing point, fit a timber noggin or metal pattress between the studs first, or fix through to masonry behind if there is any.

AB-08Fixing method: dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard sits on adhesive dabs over a cavity of roughly 50-75mm before the masonry behind it. Use a long fixing, such as a hollow-wall anchor rated to bridge the cavity, or drill all the way through to the masonry and use a plug and screw long enough to reach 35mm into solid material behind. A short fixing that only grips the plasterboard face will pull out under the weight of a full towel rail.

AB-09Fixing method: lath and plasterLath and plaster is fragile and can crack if you overtighten a fixing. Where possible, locate a timber stud or joist behind the laths using the same pilot-hole check as before, and screw into that. If there's no timber behind your mark, use a proper plasterboard-style toggle fixing rated for the plaster thickness, and tighten gently and evenly rather than driving it hard.

AB-10Drill the fixing holesIf you're drilling through tile, stick a strip of masking tape over the mark first to stop the bit skidding, and start slowly with a tile bit before switching to the bit for the wall behind. Drill each hole to the depth worked out in the earlier step for your wall type. Clear dust from each hole with a quick blow or a small brush before fitting the plug or anchor.

AB-11Fit the brackets and hang the railScrew the wall brackets on using the fixings chosen for your wall type, checking each is level as you go rather than after both are in. Hang the rail on the brackets and give it a firm push and pull test to check nothing flexes or pulls away from the wall. If it moves at all, stop and add a stronger fixing before using it.
AB-12Tidy up and finishVacuum up drilling dust from the floor and sill, and wipe down tiles or plasterboard around the fixing points. If you drilled through tile grout, run a thin bead of sanitary silicone around any gaps to keep water out. Pack away tools and dispose of packaging.
