AL-03Check your stopcock and think safety before you drillFind your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. Run a cable and pipe detector over every mark, but do not trust it completely: detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board, and can be confused by metal stud frames. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and know where the stopcock is before you cut into anything that might carry water.
