GR-03Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsRun a detector over every mark before you drill, but treat it as a guide, not a guarantee — detectors miss cables that are deep, in conduit, or run at odd angles, and garage ceilings often carry lighting circuits or a garage door opener supply. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you ever hit a pipe. If you have any real doubt about what's behind a mark, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.
