Fit understairs cupboard shelves to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit strong shelves inside an understairs cupboard, checking what the wall is made of before choosing the right fixing.

SH-01Measure the space and plan shelf heightsUnderstairs cupboards are rarely square, so measure the height, width and depth at several points along the slope. Decide how many shelves you want and mark rough heights on the wall with a pencil, keeping in mind the lowest point of the sloping ceiling. Leave enough gap above each shelf for what you plan to store.

SH-02Work out what each wall is made ofUnderstairs cupboards often mix wall types. The back wall is commonly dot-and-dab plasterboard over masonry, while the sloped wall following the stairs is usually timber stud, and in flats or newer builds it may be metal stud. Older houses sometimes have lath and plaster instead of plasterboard. Use a stud detector or magnet to find studs or screw heads in a line, knock along the wall to feel for the hollow sound between fixings points, and drill a small pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: timber dust means a stud, fine grey swarf means metal, and a soft crumbly feel with no dust behind a thin board often means lath and plaster.

SH-03Check for cables and pipes, and know how to shut things offCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the marked safe zones, and a detector can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board. A metal stud frame can also confuse a cheap detector. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
SH-04Mark bracket positions and check levelHold a bracket against the wall at your planned shelf height, mark the fixing holes with a pencil, then use a spirit level to draw a level line across for each shelf. On dot-and-dab, tap the wall to find the dabs behind the plasterboard, which are usually on roughly 300mm vertical and horizontal centres, and try to land at least one fixing per bracket over a dab or the masonry itself.

SH-05Drill and fix the brackets for your wall typeOn solid brick or block, drill with a 6mm masonry bit to at least 50mm depth, fit a wall plug, then use a 50mm screw. On dot-and-dab, drill through the 12.5mm plasterboard and the dab gap into the masonry behind, then use a long fixing (75-90mm) with a matching plug so it grips the solid wall, not just the board. On timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and use a 4x40mm wood screw. On metal stud, never use a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, as it will strip straight through 0.5mm steel; use a self-drilling metal-stud screw for light loads or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor for anything with more pull, and if the shelf will carry real weight or anything that tugs at the wall, fit a timber noggin between the studs first or fix through to the masonry behind instead. On lath and plaster, fix through the lath into the timber stud or masonry behind it rather than into the lath alone, as it can crumble under load.

SH-06Tighten and check every bracketFit each bracket fully home and tighten the screws so there is no wobble. Pull on each bracket by hand before moving on. If any fixing feels loose or spins without gripping, stop, fill the hole, and move a few centimetres to try again rather than trusting a weak fixing.
SH-07Cut the shelves to fitMeasure each shelf individually rather than assuming they are all the same size, since the sloped wall changes the depth at each height. Mark the board, cut with a hand saw or jigsaw, and sand any rough edges smooth. If a shelf needs an angled cut to follow the stair line, mark it directly from the wall rather than trusting a square edge.

SH-08Fit and level each shelfRest each shelf on its brackets and check it sits level with a spirit level. If the brackets have a fixing hole on top, screw the shelf down to stop it lifting. Adjust or shim slightly if the wall is uneven, which is common in understairs cupboards.

SH-09Load test and tidy upPush down firmly on each shelf and load it gradually with what you plan to store, checking nothing flexes or pulls away from the wall. Vacuum up drilling dust and sweep offcuts, and bag up any waste board for disposal.
