Fit tongue-and-groove panelling to a metal stud wall

Batten out the wall, then fix tongue-and-groove boards over the top, choosing the right fixing for whatever is behind the plasterboard.

TGP-01Plan the job and buy materialsMeasure the wall height and width to work out how many T&G boards and battens you need, adding 10% extra for waste and cutting. Decide on board direction — vertical boards need horizontal battens, and horizontal boards need vertical battens. Buy pre-primed or pre-finished MDF or timber T&G if you want less painting later.

TGP-02Work out your wall type before you startUse a stud detector or magnet to find the studs, and note the spacing — usually 400mm or 600mm centres. Knock along the wall: a dull thud is a stud, a hollow sound is the gap between them. Drill a small pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot — timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and a solid, gritty feel with no give means brick or block behind plasterboard, either dot-and-dab or dry-lined. If the wall is older with a bouncy, slightly springy feel and horizontal ridges under the plaster, it may be lath and plaster, which is more fragile.

TGP-03Check for cables and pipes, and find your stopcockCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones' — run your detector over the whole area, but still expect something to be there and prove it isn't. Detectors can miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, cables behind metal-backed plasterboard, and metal stud frames can confuse cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns before you start. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into any wall that could hide a pipe.
TGP-04Mark and level the batten linesMark a level line for the top and bottom batten, then space intermediate lines every 400-600mm depending on board length and stiffness. Use a spirit level or laser level to keep every line true — panelling shows up any wonkiness badly. Mark where any socket or switch will need a batten close by to support the board edge.

TGP-05Fix the battens to the wallInto solid brick or block, drill a 6mm hole to 40mm depth, insert a wall plug, and use a 40-50mm screw at every stud-width point along the batten. Into a timber stud wall, drive a 45mm wood screw straight into the centre of each stud through the batten. Into a metal stud wall, use self-drilling metal-stud screws or hollow-wall toggle fixings — never a plastic wall plug or ordinary wood screw, as both strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Into dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to pass through the board, the adhesive dabs, and into the masonry behind, typically 75-100mm; into lath and plaster, use screws that locate the timber laths behind and avoid overtightening, which can crack the old plaster.

TGP-06Know what a metal stud will not holdA metal stud fixing is fine for the light load of the battens and boards themselves, but it will not hold anything heavy or anything that pulls away from the wall, like a shelf bracket or a wall light fitted on top of the finished panelling later. If you plan to hang something heavier on the panelling afterwards, fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind, before you close the wall up with boards.

TGP-07Fit the first boardCut your first board to height, allowing a 5-10mm gap at floor and ceiling for expansion, which any skirting or coving will cover later. Fix it plumb against a corner or edge with its groove facing into the room, using a spirit level to check it before fixing. Secret-nail through the tongue at a 45° angle into each batten, so no fixings show on the face.

TGP-08Fit the remaining boardsSlot the next board's groove over the previous board's tongue and tap gently home with a mallet and offcut to protect the edge. Check every third or fourth board with a spirit level, since small gaps can add up across a wall. Secret-nail through the tongue into each batten as before, keeping the boards snug but not forced.
TGP-09Cut around sockets and switchesIsolate the circuit at the consumer unit before removing any faceplate, then unscrew and pull the socket or switch forward slightly. Hold the board in place, mark the cut-out, and cut it with a jigsaw. Fit a socket spacer box if the panelling thickness means the original screws no longer reach the mounting box, then refit the faceplate once the power is back on.

TGP-10Fit the final board and scribe if neededMeasure the final gap carefully, as walls are rarely perfectly square, and scribe the board to follow any unevenness in the corner. Cut the tongue off this last board so it sits flush, and fix it with panel adhesive or pins driven through the face near the edge where a trim will cover them.

TGP-11Add trim and finishFit skirting, scotia, or corner beading to cover the expansion gaps at floor, ceiling, and corners, mitring corners for a neat finish. Fill any nail holes with matching filler, then sand lightly once dry. Apply your chosen paint, varnish, or wax if the boards are not pre-finished.

TGP-12Clean upSweep or vacuum up sawdust and offcuts, and check the floor for stray pins or screws. Wipe down skirting and flooring near the work area, and store any leftover boards flat to prevent warping. Dispose of offcuts and packaging responsibly, recycling what you can.
