Fit tongue-and-groove panelling to a timber stud wall

Batten the wall, then fix tongue-and-groove boards across it, finishing with trim and a coat of paint.

TP-01Clear the room and strip the wallMove furniture away from the wall and lay dust sheets. Take down curtains, shelves or pictures, and unscrew any socket or switch faceplates that sit in the panelling area (leave the wiring in place, just loosen the plate). If you're removing the skirting board to fit panelling behind it, ease it off gently with a bolster and claw hammer so you can refit or replace it later.

TP-02Work out what's behind the wallRun a stud detector or magnet across the wall to find the line of fixings. A hollow sound between finds usually means plasterboard on studs; a dead, solid sound all over usually means brick or block, or dot-and-dab plasterboard bonded straight to masonry. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and brick dust means masonry. This tells you which fixings you'll need for the battens in a later step.

TP-03Plan your batten layoutMeasure the wall's height and width and sketch where horizontal battens will go: one near the floor, one near the ceiling, and rows in between at roughly 400-600mm centres. Mark each line with a spirit level so it's dead horizontal, and note where any socket or switch box falls, since a batten shouldn't cross it. Check your batten lines against the stud or fixing points you found in the last step.

TP-04Fix the battens to the wallCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones'. Before you drill, check your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) turns freely, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe, and if you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit first. A detector helps but misses deep cables, armoured cable and anything behind metal-backed board, so drill a shallow test hole first and stop immediately if you feel resistance or see anything unexpected. For a timber stud wall, screw 25x38mm battens into the centre of each stud with 45mm wood screws. For a metal stud wall, use self-drilling metal-stud screws or hollow-wall toggles rated for the batten's weight — never a wood screw or plastic plug, as they strip straight through 0.5mm steel. For dot-and-dab plasterboard, use fixings long enough to pass through the board and adhesive dabs into the masonry behind, typically 60-75mm. For solid brick or block, drill a 7mm hole, insert a wall plug, and drive a 50mm screw home. For lath and plaster, find the timber studs behind the laths with your detector and screw into those, since the laths alone won't hold a fixing.

TP-05Cut and fix the first boardMeasure floor to ceiling and cut your first tongue-and-groove board about 10mm short at top and bottom, to allow for movement. Stand it plumb against a corner using your spirit level, groove edge into the corner, and fix it through the face near the edge with 40mm panel pins into each batten. Pin through the tongue at an angle (secret nailing) so the next board hides the fixing.

TP-06Fit the remaining boardsSlot each new board's groove over the previous board's tongue, tap it home gently with an offcut and mallet to protect the edge, then secret-nail through the tongue into each batten. Check every third or fourth board with your spirit level and nudge it slightly if it's drifting out of plumb. If a board needs to be cut around a socket or switch, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit first, then mark and cut the opening with a jigsaw before refitting the faceplate.

TP-07Fit the final boardThe last board usually needs to be cut to width lengthways, so its tongue is lost. Measure the remaining gap at both top and bottom (walls are rarely perfectly parallel), cut the board to match, and fix it with panel pins through the face close to the edge, or with panel adhesive if the edge is very narrow.

TP-08Fit trim at top, bottom and cornersCover the expansion gaps with quadrant or scotia beading along the top and bottom, mitring the corners at 45°. Refit the original skirting board on top if you removed it earlier, or fit new skirting if the old one no longer fits. Pin the trim into the battens, not just the board face, so it stays put.

TP-09Fill, sand and finishFill all visible pin holes and any gaps at joints with a flexible wood filler, then leave it to dry fully. Sand lightly by hand with fine sandpaper once dry, wipe away the dust, and apply your chosen finish — primer and paint, or a wood oil or varnish — in thin, even coats.

TP-10Tidy upVacuum sawdust and offcuts from the floor and skirting line, and wipe down the wall and any nearby surfaces. Bag offcuts and packaging for disposal, and put your tools away. Give paint or filler a full day to cure before pushing furniture back against the wall.
