WP-03Check for pipes and cables before you drill anythingCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones'. Sweep the whole area you plan to drill with a cable and pipe detector, then still treat the wall as if something is there — detectors miss deep cables, anything in metal conduit, cables behind metal-backed board, and they get confused near a metal stud frame itself. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near a socket or switch, and turn the water off at the stopcock before drilling anywhere close to a pipe run.
