Fit shaker-style wall panelling to a timber stud wall

Learn how to fit shaker-style MDF panelling to a wall, from planning and cutting to fixing and painting.

SP-01Plan your panel layoutMeasure the wall width and height in mm and sketch the panel layout on paper, spacing vertical stiles evenly (typically 400-600mm apart). Decide on rail height for the top rail (often 1000-1200mm) and mark where skirting meets the wall. Order 5-10% extra MDF to cover cutting mistakes.

SP-02Work out what your wall is made ofRun a stud detector or magnet across the wall to find a vertical line of screw heads under the plasterboard - this shows stud spacing. Tap between fixing points: a dull thud usually means solid masonry or dot-and-dab, a hollow sound means a stud wall cavity. If you drill a small pilot hole and get pale timber dust, it's a timber stud; fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud; if the drill meets solid resistance almost immediately behind a skim of plaster, it's solid brick or block, or dot-and-dab plasterboard on masonry.

SP-03Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones' - a detector helps but can miss deep cables, metal conduit, or anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and metal stud frames confuse cheap detectors further. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

No specific Building Regulation applies to hanging wall panelling, but if you disturb electrical circuits while fixing, any new wiring work must meet Part P of the Building Regulations.

SP-04Cut the rails and stilesCut your top rail, skirting cap and vertical stiles to length using a mitre saw or a fine-tooth handsaw and mitre block, checking each length against the wall before cutting the next. Sand cut ends lightly with 120-grit paper to remove any rough edges. Dry-fit a few pieces against the wall to check they sit flush before fixing anything permanently.

SP-05Mark level lines for the railsUse a spirit level to draw a horizontal pencil line at your chosen top rail height right across the wall, and another for the skirting cap if fitting one. Mark the vertical stile positions along this line using your layout sketch from step 1. Double-check every mark against the opposite wall corner, since walls are rarely perfectly square.

SP-06Fix the top rail and skirting capFor a TIMBER stud wall, screw through the rail into the centre of each stud using 50-60mm wood screws, driving a pilot hole first. For a METAL stud wall, use self-drilling metal-stud screws designed for 0.5mm steel track - never a wood screw, which strips straight through, and never a plain plastic wall plug. For SOLID BRICK OR BLOCK, drill 7mm holes to 45mm depth, insert red wall plugs and fix with 50mm screws. For DOT-AND-DAB plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard and dab (often 75-90mm) into the masonry behind, or use a suitable dot-and-dab-rated frame fixing. For LATH AND PLASTER, screw into the timber laths where you find them solid, or fix into the timber studs behind if accessible, since the plaster itself will crumble under load.

SP-07Fix the vertical stilesApply a bead of grab adhesive to the back of each stile, then position it on your marked line and press firmly for 30 seconds. Add mechanical fixings at the top and bottom of each stile using the correct fixing for your wall type from step 6, since adhesive alone won't hold long-term. Wipe away any excess adhesive immediately with a damp cloth.

SP-08Fit any mid rails and check everything is squareIf your layout includes a mid rail, fix it between the stiles using the same method as step 6, checking with a spirit level as you go. Step back and check the whole layout looks even and square before the adhesive fully cures. Leave the panelling undisturbed for at least an hour to let adhesive set.
SP-09Fill and caulk all jointsFill screw holes and any small gaps in the MDF with wood filler, then sand flush once dry. Run a thin bead of flexible decorator's caulk along every joint where panelling meets the wall, and along mitred corners, smoothing it with a wet finger. Leave the caulk to cure fully, usually a few hours, before painting.

SP-10Sand and primeOnce filler and caulk are fully dry, sand all surfaces lightly with 180-grit paper to give an even finish. Wipe away dust with a dry cloth or tack cloth. Apply one coat of primer if the MDF isn't already primed, and let it dry fully before painting.

SP-11Paint the finish coatsApply two coats of water-based satin or eggshell paint with a good-quality brush, allowing each coat to dry fully before the next. Cut in carefully along ceiling and floor edges. Check for any missed nail holes or gaps once dry and touch up as needed.

SP-12Clean up and check fixingsRemove dust sheets and vacuum any sawdust or filler dust from the floor and skirting. Give every panel and rail a firm push to check nothing has come loose. Store any leftover MDF offcuts and fixings in case of future repairs.
