Fit understairs cupboard shelves to a lath and plaster wall

Fit sturdy understairs shelves, picking the right fixing for lath and plaster, brick, or stud walls safely.

US-01Plan the shelf positionsMeasure the cupboard's width, depth and the sloping ceiling height at several points along its length, since the slope changes headroom fast under stairs. Decide how many shelves you want and how far apart, based on what you're storing. Mark a level line for each shelf with a spirit level rather than by eye — the sloping stair line will trick your judgement. Note where the wall changes from masonry to stud framing, common under stairs where the outer wall is brick and the stair string is timber studwork.

US-02Check for cables and pipes, and know your shut-offsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, even under a staircase, so sweep a cable and pipe detector over every mark before you drill. Detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or outside the normal safe zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse cheap detectors further — always assume something could be there and prove it isn't. Before drilling, find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

US-03Work out exactly what's behind the wallFor lath and plaster, tap gently to find the solid timber studs behind the laths — you'll hear a duller thud over a stud and a slightly hollow, springy sound between them. Where the understairs wall is stud-built rather than solid brick, work out whether the studs are timber or metal: track a line of screw heads with a magnet or stud detector, listen for the same hollow-versus-solid sound, and drill a small 3mm pilot hole in a hidden spot — timber dust means timber, fine grey swarf means metal. Metal studs are common in flats, new builds and anything refitted since the 1990s, so don't assume timber just because the house is older.

US-04Choose the right fixing for your wallOn lath and plaster, aim your fixing into the timber stud behind where you can, using a wood screw into the centre of the stud; where you must fix between studs into laths only, use a spring toggle rated for the load, because ordinary plugs crack fragile old plaster and laths. Into solid brick or block, drill with a 7mm masonry bit to the plug's depth and use a matching wall plug and screw. Into plasterboard on timber studs, use a wood screw straight into the stud centre; into plasterboard on metal studs, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or hollow-wall toggle made for steel — never a plastic plug or wood screw, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough (typically 60–75mm) to reach the masonry behind rather than relying on the plasterboard skin alone, since cupboard shelves and their contents carry real weight.

US-05Mark and drill the fixing holesHold each bracket against its level line and mark the hole centres through the bracket with a pencil. Drill masonry to the plug's exact depth with a masonry bit; drill timber studs with a 2mm pilot smaller than the screw shank; for toggle fixings, drill the exact hole size stated on the pack, usually 8–10mm. Vacuum plaster dust and debris out of each hole before inserting the plug or toggle, so the fixing seats properly.

US-06Fit the bracketsInsert each plug or toggle fully, then screw the bracket home so it sits flush and doesn't wobble. Check each bracket against the spirit level as you go, not just at the end, since one out-of-level bracket throws the whole shelf off. Tighten fully but don't overtighten into old lath and plaster, which can crack under too much force.

US-07Cut and fit the shelfMeasure the alcove's width and depth at shelf height, since understairs walls are rarely square, and cut your shelf board to match. Sand the cut edges smooth, then rest the shelf on the brackets and check it sits level and doesn't rock. If your brackets have upward fixing holes, screw up through them into the underside of the shelf to stop it lifting.

US-08Load test and tidy upPress down firmly on each shelf and check nothing shifts, creaks loudly, or pulls away from the wall before you load it fully. Wipe down the shelves and cupboard, vacuum up dust and offcuts, and bin any waste. Put tools away and, if you isolated the circuit or water, switch them back on now.
