Hang kitchen wall cupboards on a lath and plaster wall

Plan cupboard heights, find solid fixings behind old plaster, then hang and level kitchen units safely in one session.

KC-01Clear the wall and protect the roomEmpty the worktop and cupboards below the work area and move any freestanding appliances out of the way. Lay dust sheets over the worktop and floor — old plaster makes a lot of mess. Check the wall for loose or crumbling plaster and patch any holes now, then leave the filler to dry fully before you carry on.

KC-02Mark out cupboard heights and positionsDecide on the gap above the worktop — 450mm to the underside of the cupboard is standard. Draw a level line for the bottom of the cupboards with a spirit level, checking it against the worktop and any window or door frames nearby. Mark where each cupboard will sit and note roughly where its fixing points fall on the wall.

KC-03Work out what's behind the lath and plasterLath and plaster is usually fixed to timber studs, but tap along the wall and drill a small test hole in an inconspicuous spot to check. A timber stud gives a dull thud and the pilot hole brings out pale wood dust once you're through the plaster and lath. A hollow gap with no resistance beyond the laths means you're between studs; solid resistance with brick dust means the laths sit over solid masonry. If your kitchen wall is actually plasterboard, run a detector along it tracking the line of screw heads — steel swarf instead of wood dust means metal studs, common in flats and newer builds.

KC-04Check for cables and pipes before drillingRun a detector over every mark you've made, but treat it as a guide, not proof — detectors miss deep cables, anything in metal conduit, cables behind metal-backed plasterboard, and they get confused by metal stud frames. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
KC-05Choose the right fixing for your wallFor lath and plaster over timber studs, use a wood screw driven into the centre of the stud, long enough to pass through the plaster and lath and still bite 35-40mm into the timber. For lath and plaster over solid masonry, drill through to the brick or block, plug it, and use a screw rated for the load. If your wall turns out to be plasterboard on metal studs, never use a plain wall plug or ordinary wood screw — a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or toggle-type hollow-wall anchor is needed, as thin steel strips out otherwise. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to pass through the void and reach the masonry behind, typically 75-90mm.

KC-06Fit a support batten along the fixing lineOld lath and plaster is often too weak to take cupboard screws directly, so fix a timber batten (44x22mm) along your level line first — this spreads the load and gives you a solid hanging rail. Screw the batten every 300-400mm, driving each screw into the centre of a stud or into plugged masonry behind the plaster. Check the batten is level along its whole length before you tighten the last screw.

KC-07Drill and fix through the old plasterDrill a small pilot hole first to confirm what's behind, then open it out to the size needed for your fixing. Expect some crumbling around the hole — lath and plaster is brittle, so drill slowly and don't force the bit. Drive fixings snugly but don't overtighten, as too much pressure can crack the plaster around the hole.

KC-08Lift and hook the first cupboardWith a helper, lift the cupboard onto the batten or line up its back rail with your marked fixing points. Most flat-pack cupboards have a keyhole slot or hanging bracket on the back — hook this over a screw left slightly protruding, or rest it on the batten temporarily while you check the fit.
KC-09Fix and level each cupboardDrive the remaining screws through the cupboard's fixing points into the batten, stud or plugged masonry. Check level across the top and front of the cupboard, adjusting the screws slightly if one corner sits low. Repeat for each cupboard along the run.

KC-10Join adjacent cupboards togetherClamp neighbouring cupboards together at the front edge and drive short screws through pre-drilled holes in the face frames or sides. This keeps the run rigid and stops individual cupboards twisting away from the wall over time.

KC-11Fit doors and adjust the gapsHang the doors on their hinges and check the gaps between them are even top to bottom. Most hinges have small adjustment screws — turn these to nudge each door left, right, in or out until the run looks level.
KC-12Load-test and tidy upLoad the cupboards gradually with plates and tins, checking for any creaking, movement, or the wall flexing — stop and re-check fixings if anything feels loose. Sweep up plaster dust and offcuts, and bag up any rubble for disposal.
