Mount an indoor security camera on a metal stud wall

Fit an indoor security camera safely, working out your wall type first and using the correct fixing for it.

SC-01Choose the mounting spotPick a spot 2.4-2.7m up that covers the doorway or area you want to watch, with a clear view and no direct sunlight hitting the lens. Check there's a socket within reach of the power lead, or that your camera runs on battery or PoE. Hold the camera or its bracket in place and check the angle before marking anything.
SC-02Gather your tools and fixingsYou'll need a detector, drill, screwdriver, spirit level, pencil and a step stool. Fixings depend on your wall type, so don't buy them until you've done the wall check in the next step. Have a dust sheet and a dustpan and brush ready for tidy-up.

SC-03Run your safety checks before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones. Sweep the spot with your detector, but still treat it as if something could be there - detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you're at all unsure, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.
SC-04Work out what your wall is made ofTap the wall: a dull, solid sound means brick or block; a hollow sound usually means plasterboard on a stud frame. If it's hollow, run a magnet or your stud detector sideways along the height you'll fix at - a line of screw heads roughly 400-600mm apart marks the studs. Drill a small 2mm pilot hole into the stud: fine pale dust means timber, fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud (common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s). If the wall sounds hollow but there's no clear stud line and the plasterboard sits proud of a masonry wall behind it, you likely have dot-and-dab. In an older house, a slightly springy wall with a faint ridged pattern under the plaster is lath and plaster.
SC-05Fix the mounting plate for your wall typeTimber stud: drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive in a 40mm wood screw. Metal stud: never use a plastic plug or a wood screw, it'll strip straight through 0.5mm steel - use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the camera's weight, driven straight into the plasterboard over the stud line. Solid brick or block: drill a 7mm hole 50mm deep, fit a wall plug, and drive in a 40mm screw. Dot-and-dab: use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard and the dab gap and bite into the masonry behind, typically 60-75mm. Lath and plaster: a light camera can usually take a plasterboard toggle fixing between the laths, but avoid heavy pulling loads - if the wall feels soft or crumbly, fix into a joist or stud instead.

SC-06Attach the bracket and cameraScrew the mounting plate to the fixings, checking it's level before fully tightening. Clip or screw the camera onto the plate, then loosen the ball joint and set the angle. Tighten the joint fully so the camera can't sag or drift over time.
SC-07Route the cable and connect powerRun the power lead down the wall using cable clips every 300mm, keeping it away from light switches and sockets. If you're drilling through the wall to hide the cable, repeat the cable and pipe checks from SC-03 first. Plug into a socket or PoE injector and check the camera powers up.

SC-08Test the picture and set the final angleOpen the camera app and check the live view, then fine-tune the angle so it covers the area you want without capturing more than you need. If your camera can see into a neighbour's garden, window, or a shared path, angle it away from those areas or mask them off in the app's privacy zone settings - the ICO's guidance on domestic CCTV says footage of areas beyond your own property can bring your camera under data protection law. Check night vision and motion alerts work before you finish.

This isn't Building Regulations, but the ICO's guidance on domestic CCTV: footage that captures neighbouring property or shared/public space can fall under the Data Protection Act 2018/UK GDPR. Angling the camera to stay within your own boundary avoids this.

SC-09Tidy upSweep up any drill dust and offcuts, and wipe down the wall. Bag up any unused fixings for next time and store your tools away.
