Mount an indoor security camera on a solid brick or block wall

Mount a security camera securely on your wall, keeping cables tidy and aiming it to cover your entry point.

AB-01Plan the position and cable routeChoose a spot 2.4m to 3m high that covers your door or drive without pointing at a neighbour's window or the public footpath. Decide whether the cable will run inside through the wall to a plug socket, or outside along the wall surface to an exterior power point. Check the route does not cross over a socket, light switch, or an obvious pipe run such as one leading to an outside tap.

AB-02Gather your tools and materialsUnpack the camera kit and check you have the mounting plate, screws and any wall plugs supplied. Supplied plugs are often too short or thin for solid brick or block, so buy proper masonry wall plugs and matching screws to be sure. Get a dust mask, safety glasses and a dustpan ready, since drilling brick or block makes a lot of dust.

AB-03Check for pipes and cables before you drillRun a cable and pipe detector over the marked spot, but still treat the wall as if something is there until you have real reasons to think otherwise — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or outside the normal safe zones near sockets and switches. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.

AB-04Mark and drill the fixing holesHold the mounting plate against the wall, level it, and mark the screw holes with a pencil. Fit a 6mm masonry bit to a drill (use hammer action for dense brick or block) and drill each hole 40mm deep, slightly deeper than your screw length. Drill steadily and pause to clear dust from the hole so the plug seats properly.

AB-05Fit the wall plugs and mounting plateTap a wall plug into each hole until it sits flush with the wall surface. Hold the mounting plate in place and drive a screw into each plug, tightening until the plate is firm and does not wobble. Do not overtighten — stop as soon as the plate stops turning easily.

AB-06Route and secure the cableIf running the cable outside through the wall, drill a small hole angled slightly downward so rain runs away from the house, feed the cable through, then seal both ends with exterior silicone once the camera is fitted. If running the cable along the wall to an indoor socket, fix it every 300mm with cable clips so it lies flat and cannot be snagged or tripped over.

AB-07Fit the camera and connect powerClip or screw the camera body onto the mounting plate as shown in the kit instructions. Plug the power adaptor into a socket and connect it to the camera, or connect to your existing outdoor power point if wired outside. Check the camera light comes on before moving to the next step.

AB-08Test, adjust and tidy upOpen the camera app and check the live picture, then loosen the mounting joint slightly and angle the camera to frame your entry point properly before retightening. Vacuum up brick dust from the floor and skirting, and wipe down the wall around the fixing. Bag any rubble and offcuts for your normal rubbish collection.
