Mount an indoor security camera on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fix a bracket through dot-and-dab plasterboard into the masonry behind, then mount and power your indoor camera safely.

MC-01Choose the camera spot and check the power sourcePick a position with a clear view and, ideally, a socket within reach of the camera's power lead. Most indoor cameras run off a plug-in adapter into a normal 13A socket, not a hardwired connection. Avoid mounting directly above a socket, switch or radiator pipe run.
MC-02Gather your tools and materialsLay everything out before you start: drill, masonry bit, screwdriver, spirit level, pencil and dust sheet. Dot-and-dab needs a long fixing that bridges the air gap and bites into the solid wall behind, so don't rely on standard plasterboard plugs alone.

MC-03Check for hidden cables and pipes before drillingCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, and behind dot-and-dab there's also a masonry wall to worry about. Use a detector to scan the spot, but still treat it as if something could be there: drill slowly and stop the moment you feel resistance or see dust colour change. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
MC-04Mark and drill the fixing holesHold the bracket against the wall, level it, and mark the screw holes with a pencil. Drill through the plasterboard skin first at low speed, then through the air gap behind it (typically 20-50mm), then on into the solid brick or block. Drill to the depth stated on the fixing packet, usually 50-65mm into the masonry itself.
MC-05Fit the frame fixing plugsPush each long fixing plug into its hole until it sits flush with the plasterboard face. These plugs are designed to bridge the dot-and-dab void and grip in the masonry behind, unlike a standard plastic wall plug which will just spin in the gap. Tap gently with a hammer if needed, but don't force a plug that won't seat properly.
MC-06Screw the bracket to the wallLine the bracket up over the plugs and drive the screws in with a screwdriver, not a drill on full power, so you can feel when they're tight. Check the bracket is level and doesn't rock. Give it a firm tug by hand before trusting it with the camera.
MC-07Route and secure the power cableRun the camera's power lead to the nearest socket, keeping it away from curtains, hot pipes and foot traffic. Use cable clips every 300-400mm to hold it neatly against the wall or skirting rather than leaving it hanging. Plugging into an existing socket is not notifiable work; if you're tempted to cut the plug off and hardwire the camera into the mains permanently, that counts as new fixed wiring and Part P of the Building Regulations may apply, especially in a kitchen or bathroom — get an electrician for that instead.

KNOW THE RULES

Plugging into an existing socket needs no notification. Permanently hardwiring the camera into the mains (removing the plug) counts as new fixed wiring, which can fall under Part P of the Building Regulations, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.

MC-08Fit the camera and test itClip or screw the camera head onto the bracket, angle it to cover the area you want, and tighten the adjustment joint. Plug in the power lead, let the camera boot up, and pair it with its app following the manufacturer's instructions. Check the live view and, if it has one, the motion-detection zone before you finish.
MC-09Tidy up and check the finishSweep or vacuum up drill dust from the floor and skirting. Check the bracket screws are still tight and the cable is neatly clipped with no trip hazard. Step back and confirm the camera view lines up with what you actually wanted covered.
