Mount speaker brackets on a solid brick or block wall

Plan, drill and fix speaker brackets onto a solid brick or block wall, then tidy up.

SPK-01Plan bracket positions and mark upDecide how high you want the speakers and how far apart. Hold each bracket against the wall, check it sits level, and mark the fixing holes with a pencil. Use a tape measure to keep both brackets at matching height and spacing.

SPK-02Check for hidden cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones. Run a cable and pipe detector over every marked point before drilling, but still treat the wall as if something is there — deep cables, metal conduit and anything outside the safe zones are easy to miss. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.

SPK-03Drill pilot holes into the brick or blockFit a masonry bit matched to your wall plug size, usually 6mm or 7mm, into an SDS or hammer drill. Drill each marked point to the depth stated on the plug packet, typically 40-50mm, keeping the drill square to the wall. Pause every few seconds to clear dust, and hold a dust sheet or vacuum nozzle under the hole to catch debris.

SPK-04Insert the wall plugsPush a wall plug into each hole until it sits flush with the surface. If a plug won't sit flush, tap it gently with a hammer through a scrap of wood to protect the wall. Check each plug is snug and doesn't spin freely in the hole.

SPK-05Fix the brackets to the wallLine the bracket up with the plugged holes and drive in the screws until it sits flat and doesn't wobble. Use a screwdriver or a drill on a low torque setting so you don't overtighten and crack the plug.

SPK-06Level and tighten each bracketHold a spirit level along the top of each bracket and adjust before final tightening if it's out. Give every screw a last check for tightness, and gently tug the bracket to make sure it doesn't move.

SPK-07Attach the speakers and route the cablesClip or screw each speaker onto its bracket following the manufacturer's fitting instructions. Run the speaker cable neatly down to the amp or receiver, securing it with cable clips so it doesn't hang loose.

SPK-08Tidy upVacuum up brick dust and offcuts from the floor and skirting. Wipe down the wall and brackets with a dry cloth, and dispose of packaging responsibly.
