Mount speaker brackets on a lath and plaster wall

Work out what's behind your wall, then fix speaker brackets safely and securely without cracking old plaster.

SB-01Plan the bracket positionsDecide where each speaker will sit and mark the screw holes on the wall using the bracket as a template. Use a spirit level to keep both brackets level with each other and check the manufacturer's fixing instructions for the bracket's weight rating. Hold the bracket up first and check cable runs and door swing before you mark anything.

SB-02Work out what's really behind the plasterLath and plaster is usually found in houses built before the 1930s: thin timber laths nailed across timber studs or joists, covered in a lime plaster skim. Run a stud detector or a magnet over the marked area, looking for the line of nail heads that shows where a timber batten sits, and tap gently — a dull thud means solid timber behind, a hollower sound means you're between laths. Drill one small 3mm pilot hole at your mark and check what comes out: pale timber dust means a lath or stud, fine grey dust means solid brick or block behind a plaster skim, and bright steel swarf means you've hit metal — either an old metal lath repair or, in a part-renovated house, a modern metal stud or plasterboard fixing. If the wall doesn't behave like lath and plaster at all — completely flat, no give, feels like board — check whether the room has been re-plastered onto plasterboard (dot-and-dab) or a stud partition, and use the matching fixing method later in this guide instead.

SB-03Check for cables and pipes, and find your stopcockCables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, and a detector can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or hidden by metal lath. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and don't rely on the detector alone.
SB-04Fix into a timber lath, stud or joistDrill a 2mm pilot hole into the centre of the timber, 5mm deep, to stop the screw splitting the lath. Use a wood screw at least 60mm long so it passes through the plaster, the lath and 30mm or more into solid timber. Drive it in firmly but stop as soon as it's tight — old lime plaster cracks easily if you overtighten.

SB-05Fix between laths where there's no timber (light fittings only)If your bracket position falls between studs with no timber to bite into, only fix here if the speaker and bracket together are light, and check the fixing's stated weight rating first. Use a spring toggle or heavy-duty hollow-wall fixing designed for old lath and plaster, not a standard plasterboard toggle, because the laths and gaps behind can be fragile. Where possible, shift the bracket a few centimetres to land on a timber lath or stud instead — it's a much stronger fix.

SB-06Fix into solid brick or block, if that's what you findDrill with a 6mm masonry bit to a depth of 45mm, clear the dust from the hole, then insert a 6mm wall plug. Drive in a 6x50mm screw until snug. Don't overtighten — you want the screw tight in the plug, not crushing the masonry face.

SB-07Fix into plasterboard, if the wall's been re-boardedOn plasterboard over timber studs, use a wood screw straight into the centre of the stud, the same as fixing SB-04. On plasterboard over metal studs, never use a wood screw or plastic plug — 0.5mm steel strips instantly — use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor instead. Between studs, use a toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the combined weight of the bracket and speaker. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, the board sits 10-50mm off the masonry on adhesive dabs, so use a longer fixing — typically 75mm — that reaches through the void into the solid wall behind, or a dot-and-dab-specific fixing designed to grip both the board and the masonry. A metal stud alone will not hold a heavy or pulling load; if the bracket will be pulled on or is heavy, fit a timber noggin or pattress between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind.

SB-08Mount the bracket and attach the speakerScrew the bracket to the wall using the fixing method for your wall type, checking with a spirit level as you go. Tighten evenly so the bracket doesn't tilt, then attach the speaker following the manufacturer's instructions. Give the mounted speaker a firm push and pull to check nothing moves or creaks.

SB-09Route and tidy the speaker cableRun the cable down to the nearest socket using cable clips or slim trunking, keeping it clear of skirting boards where it could get kicked. Leave a small slack loop at the bracket so the speaker can be angled slightly without straining the cable. Avoid running cable across doorways or walkways.

SB-10Clean up and do a final checkVacuum up plaster dust from the pilot holes and wipe down the wall around the fixings. Check the plaster hasn't cracked or crumbled around the screw heads; if it has, fill small cracks with a matching plaster filler once the bracket is fully secure. Give both speakers a final wobble test before you finish.
