Mount speaker brackets on a timber stud wall

Find out what your wall is made of, then fit speaker brackets with the correct fixing for a secure finish.

SB-01Gather your tools and check the bracketUnpack the brackets and check the weight rating against your speakers – most bookshelf speakers are under 5kg per bracket, but check the box. Lay out a drill, screwdriver or driver bit, spirit level, tape measure, pencil, detector, and a dust sheet for the floor. Hold the bracket against the wall to check the hole spacing before you mark anything.

SB-02Mark the fixing height and level lineHold the bracket at your chosen height and mark the top screw hole with a pencil. Use a spirit level to draw a level horizontal line through that mark, then measure across for the second hole. Double-check both marks line up before you drill anything.

SB-03Work out what the wall is made ofKnock on the wall. A dull, solid thud with no give is brick or block. A hollow sound that changes as you move sideways is a stud wall or dot-and-dab. On a stud wall, run a detector or magnet across the surface to find a line of screw heads under the plaster – these mark the studs. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at your mark: pale, splintery dust means timber studs, fine grey metal swarf means metal studs, and a soft crumbly dust with an old lath pattern behind it means lath and plaster.

SB-04Check for pipes and cables before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones' near sockets and switches. Run a detector over the area, but still expect something to be there and prove otherwise – detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and metal stud frames confuse cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
SB-05Fix into a timber studDrill a 2mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud to stop the screw splitting the wood. Drive a 40mm wood screw straight through the plasterboard and into the stud, checking it feels solid, not spinning loosely. Repeat for the second fixing point, keeping both screws in the same stud line if the bracket spacing allows.

SB-06Fix into a metal studNever use a plain wall plug or ordinary wood screw in a metal stud – it strips straight through the 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for metal track, driven with a low-speed setting so it doesn't spin out. A metal stud alone won't hold anything heavy or anything that pulls away from the wall in use, so if your speaker bracket is a heavy or long-throw type, fit a timber noggin between the studs first or fix through to solid masonry behind if there is any.

SB-07Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab has an air gap between the plasterboard and the masonry wall behind, so a normal plug won't reach anything solid. Use a long frame fixing or a hollow-wall toggle rated for the weight and long enough to pass through the board, the gap, and bite into the masonry – typically 75-90mm. Drill through gently and check for resistance as you cross the gap, so you know when you've reached the wall behind.

SB-08Fix into solid brick or blockDrill a 6mm hole to a depth of 45mm using a masonry bit, and fit a matching 6mm wall plug. Drive a 50mm screw into the plug until it seats firmly without over-tightening, which can crack the plaster around the hole. Clear dust from the hole first with a puff of air so the plug seats properly.

SB-09Fix into lath and plasterOld lath and plaster is fragile and crumbles easily, so avoid screwing straight into the lath itself. Use a plasterboard-style toggle fixing rated for the bracket's weight, drilling just large enough for the toggle to pass through cleanly without widening the hole. Keep the load light – lath and plaster is not suited to heavy or long-arm brackets, so consider fixing to a stud or masonry point nearby instead if the speaker is heavy.

SB-10Mount the bracket and check it's secureOffer the bracket up to the fixings and tighten the screws fully, checking with the spirit level that it's still true. Give the bracket a firm tug and a gentle downward pull to test it holds without any movement or crumbling around the fixing. If anything feels loose or the wall crumbles, remove it and refit using a longer or heavier-rated fixing.
SB-11Attach the speaker and route the cableSit the speaker on the bracket and check it locks or clicks into place as the manufacturer intended. Run the speaker cable down to the amp or wall socket, securing it with cable clips every 300mm so it doesn't hang loose or trip anyone. Avoid running the cable across a doorway or under a rug where it can be a trip hazard.

SB-12Clean upLift the dust sheet carefully, folding the dust inward, and vacuum any remaining plaster or masonry dust from the floor and skirting. Wipe down the wall around the fixing with a damp cloth to remove pencil marks and dust. Put spare fixings and offcuts away for next time.
