Put up a bay window curtain pole on a metal stud wall

Fit a bay window curtain pole safely, checking what's behind the wall at each bracket before drilling and fixing securely.

BW-01Clear the window and check your kitTake down any old curtains, pole or track, and move furniture away from under the window. Lay a dust sheet on the floor and sill. Unpack the new bay pole kit and check you have a corner connector for each corner and enough support brackets — bay poles usually need one every 400-600mm plus one at each corner joint. The screws in the box are often only right for timber stud or masonry, so check what you actually have before you start.

BW-02Work out what's behind the wall at each bracket pointBay windows often mix construction — the corner piers may be solid brick or block, while the flat sections either side can be timber stud, metal stud, dot-and-dab plasterboard, or old lath and plaster. Check each bracket mark separately with a stud detector or magnet: a line of screw heads under plasterboard means a stud behind, a hollow sound between them means just board. Drill a small 2mm pilot hole at each mark — pale dust means timber, fine grey swarf means metal, and a dead solid feel with brick-red dust means masonry. Don't assume one wall type applies right round the bay.

BW-03Safety check before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, and a detector can miss deep cables, metal conduit, or anything behind metal-backed board — a metal stud frame will also confuse a cheap detector. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and don't drill into anything that could carry water until the stopcock is off.
BW-04Mark and level the bracket positionsHold the corner connectors in place first and mark their fixing holes — these carry most of the load, so get them right. Use a spirit level to run a level line across each of the three sections, then mark the remaining brackets evenly spaced along it. Check the pole will clear any window handles, hinges or opening lights before you commit to any marks.

BW-05Fix brackets into a metal stud sectionFor a bracket landing on a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud screw (no pilot hole needed) or a metal toggle-type hollow-wall anchor if you're between studs — never a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel. A single metal stud fixing will not reliably hold a bay pole loaded with heavy curtains, especially at the corners. Fit a timber noggin between the studs first if you can get behind the board, or run a longer fixing through to the masonry behind if there is one.

BW-06Fix brackets into a timber stud sectionFind the centre of the stud and drill a 2mm pilot hole to stop the screw splitting the timber. Drive a 4mm x 40mm wood screw straight into the centre of the stud through the bracket. Never fix into the edge of a stud — it can split and pull loose under weight.

BW-07Fix brackets into solid brick or blockDrill with a 6mm masonry bit to a depth of 45mm, deeper than the plug you're using. Push in a plastic wall plug flush with the surface and drive in a 50mm screw. If the wall is soft or crumbly, go up to a heavier-duty plug rated for the pole's weight.

BW-08Fix brackets into dot-and-dab plasterboardBehind dot-and-dab there's a gap of 10-50mm between the plasterboard and the masonry wall, so a normal wall plug won't reach anything solid. Drill through the board and the gap, then into the masonry behind, and use a long frame fixing (75-100mm) or a long masonry screw that bites well past the dab. Check with a bradawl or thin drill first so you know how deep the gap actually is before choosing your fixing length.

BW-09Fix brackets into lath and plasterOld lath and plaster is thin and can crack around a fixing, so avoid heavy expanding anchors. Find a lath (the thin timber strips behind the plaster) with a pilot hole and fix into it with a coarse-thread screw, rather than relying on the plaster alone. If you can't hit a lath reliably, use a plasterboard-style toggle fixing sized for the wall thickness and go gently to avoid crumbling the surface.

BW-10Join the corners and fit the poleScrew the corner connectors together first, then slide the straight pole sections into them and offer the whole assembly up to the fitted brackets. Adjust the corner joints slightly until the pole sits square with the window and each bracket takes an even share of the weight. Tighten every bracket screw fully before moving on.
BW-11Hang the curtains and testThread the curtain rings or hooks onto the pole before the final section goes in, if your kit needs it done this way. Hang the curtains and run them along the full length of the bay, checking the brackets don't flex or creak under the weight. If any bracket feels loose, re-check the fixing before you leave it.
BW-12Tidy upVacuum up drilling dust and swarf from the sill and floor — steel swarf can be sharp, so don't just brush it away by hand. Fold and remove the dust sheet, and bin the offcuts and packaging. Give the pole and brackets a final wipe down.
