CT-03Check for cables and pipes, and know your shut-offs before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, including up to a bay window for sockets or radiator pipework, so sweep the whole fixing line with your detector first. Even with a clear reading, still expect something to be there and drill carefully, since detectors miss deep cables, cables in conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal stud frame can confuse cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
