BW-02Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a wall, not just in the 'safe zones'. Run a cable and pipe detector over every mark you plan to drill, but still treat each hole as if something could be there — detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about a mark near a socket or light, isolate that circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.
