Put up a door curtain pole on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit a curtain pole above your door safely and securely, choosing the right fixing for your wall before you drill.

DCP-01Gather your tools and check the kitUnpack the curtain pole and lay out the brackets, screws and any wall plugs that came with it — these are often too short or the wrong type for your wall, so keep them aside for now. You'll also need a drill, a mix of drill bits, a spirit level, a tape measure, a pencil, a screwdriver and a cable and pipe detector. Lay down a dust sheet under the work area.

DCP-02Mark the bracket positionsDecide how far above the door frame the pole should sit and how far it should extend past the frame on each side — 100-150mm past each side is typical so curtains clear the door. Mark one bracket point with a pencil, then use a spirit level to draw a level line across to the second bracket point. Double-check both marks are the same height above the floor before you go any further.

DCP-03Check what's behind the wall before you drillRun your detector over each bracket mark and a wide area around it — cables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the zones you'd expect, and detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed plasterboard. Even if the detector shows nothing, drill carefully and be ready to stop. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.
DCP-04Work out what your wall is made of at each markTap the wall at each mark — a dull thud usually means solid brick or block, a hollow sound means plasterboard on a stud or dot-and-dab. Run a magnet or your detector sideways to find a line of screw heads, which tells you where a timber or metal stud runs. Drill a small pilot hole at the mark: timber dust means a wood stud, fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud, and if the drill goes through plasterboard then hits a gap before firmer material, you've likely got dot-and-dab over masonry. Lath and plaster feels softer and more brittle, and you may feel the drill drop slightly as it passes between narrow wooden laths.
DCP-05Choose the right fixing for your wall typeSolid brick or block: drill a pilot hole, fit a wall plug, and use a screw long enough to bite at least 25mm into the masonry. Timber stud: use a wood screw driven into the centre of the stud, no plug needed. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a hollow-wall toggle rated for the weight — never a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, as these strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Dot-and-dab: use a long fixing (typically 60-75mm) that passes through the plasterboard and the adhesive dabs to grip the solid masonry behind, not just the plasterboard. Lath and plaster: use a spring or gravity toggle rated for the load, since the plaster is brittle and screws alone can crack it.

DCP-06Drill the fixing holesDrill slowly and stop the moment you feel a change in resistance, or if you see cable insulation, brick dust turning to a different colour, or anything unexpected in the debris — if that happens, stop, don't force it, and check before continuing. Use the correct bit and depth for your wall type: a masonry bit for brick or block and dot-and-dab, a wood bit for timber studs, and a metal bit for metal studs. Drill dot-and-dab holes deep enough to reach at least 25mm into the masonry behind, not just through the plasterboard and dab.

DCP-07Fit the bracketsInsert your plugs or toggles as needed, then screw each bracket firmly to the wall. Check both brackets sit level with your spirit level before fully tightening, and adjust if one has crept slightly during drilling. If you're fixing into a metal stud and the pole will carry heavy or lined curtains, or anything that pulls on the fixing as it's used, a metal-stud fixing alone may not be enough — fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind if there is one.

DCP-08Hang the pole and test itRest the pole in the brackets and secure any grub screws or clips that hold it in place. Thread your curtains on first if the pole doesn't have rings that open, then hang the pole for good. Give the pole a firm downward and outward tug to check the fixing holds before you trust it with daily use.
DCP-09Tidy upVacuum up brick, plaster or metal dust from the floor and windowsill, and wipe down the wall below the fixing. Fold away the dust sheet and dispose of any offcuts or packaging. Put your tools away and store any spare fixings for next time.
