Fit garage wall shelving to a metal stud wall

Plan, mark and fix garage shelving safely and securely, working out your wall type before you drill.

GS-01Plan the layout and clear the wallDecide the shelf height and length, keeping it clear of the garage door track and any consumer unit. Measure and mark the run on the wall with a pencil, then move anything stored against it out of the way. Sweep the floor so you have a clean, safe working area.

GS-02Work out what the wall is made ofTap the wall: a dull solid sound all over usually means brick or block, a hollow sound with occasional solid spots means a stud wall. Run a magnet or stud detector along the line where the shelf will go — regular screw or nail heads every 400mm or 600mm point to timber or metal studs. Drill a small pilot hole at a mark: pale dust is masonry, curly shavings or fine wood dust is a timber stud, and fine grey swarf is a metal stud. If the wall sounds solid near the edges but hollow in the middle over a large area, with a thin plasterboard skin, you likely have dot-and-dab over blockwork.
GS-03Mark the bracket positions and check levelHold a bracket against the wall at the height you want and mark its fixing holes. Use a spirit level to draw a level line for the rest of the brackets along the run. If you found timber or metal studs in GS-02, adjust your bracket spacing so each bracket lands on a stud rather than between them.

GS-04Safety check before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the usual safe zones — a detector helps but can miss cables that are deep, in conduit, or behind metal-backed board, and metal stud frames confuse cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns before you start, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and be ready to turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

GS-05Fix brackets to solid brick or blockDrill a 6mm hole to a depth of 45–50mm using a masonry bit, then push in a matching wall plug. Drive a 50mm woodscrew through the bracket into the plug until it's firm but not overtightened. Repeat at every marked point, checking each bracket is level before moving on.

GS-06Fix brackets to a timber stud wallDrill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud, not near its edge, then drive in a 50mm woodscrew through the bracket. Do not use a plastic wall plug here — screw straight into the timber. If a bracket falls between studs, use a toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the shelf's likely load instead.

GS-07Fix brackets to a metal stud wallUse a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the shelf's load — never a plain plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, which will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. A metal stud alone will not hold heavy garage shelving or anything that gets pulled or leaned on; if the load is significant, fit a timber noggin or pattress between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind the studwork instead.

GS-08Fix brackets through dot-and-dab plasterboardA standard plasterboard fixing won't reach far enough here — there's an air gap of 20–40mm between the board and the blockwork behind. Use a long fixing (at least 75mm) that passes through the board, the gap, and into the masonry, drilling a pilot hole to suit a masonry plug at the tip. Tighten steadily so you don't crack the plasterboard face as the fixing beds into the solid wall behind.

GS-09Fit the shelf boardCut your shelf board to length if needed and rest it on the fixed brackets. Screw down through each bracket into the underside of the board using short screws so they don't poke through the top. Check the board sits level across its whole length.

GS-10Load test and tidy upPress down firmly on the shelf and check nothing moves or creaks before loading it fully. Vacuum up drill dust and any offcuts, and dispose of masonry dust and swarf sensibly rather than sweeping it into the air. Store any leftover fixings in a labelled bag for next time.
