Put up a scaffold board shelf with pipe brackets on a metal stud wall

Fit a scaffold-board shelf on pipe brackets, worked out for your wall type and fixed securely.

AB-01Plan the shelf and gather your toolsDecide the shelf length and fixing height, then mark this on the wall with a pencil using a spirit level to keep the line true. Scaffold board is heavy once loaded, so plan for a pipe bracket at least every 600mm of length. Lay out your drill, driver bits, detector, spirit level, tape measure and pencil before you start.

AB-02Work out what your wall is made ofTap along the wall: solid brick or block sounds dead and solid everywhere, while a stud wall sounds hollow between the studs and solid on the stud line itself. Run a detector or a magnet along the wall to pick up screw heads in a regular line, usually 400mm to 600mm apart, which tells you where the studs are. Drill a small 3mm test hole on a suspected stud line: pale timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud, and dust with a hard stop close to the surface can mean dot-and-dab over solid masonry behind. Lath and plaster is common in homes built before the 1930s and feels uneven and slightly springy, with narrow wooden strips visible if you look closely at a damaged patch.

AB-03Mark your bracket positionsMark the centre of each stud (or your chosen fixing point on solid brick or block) where a bracket will go, keeping brackets no more than 600mm apart. If your studs don't line up conveniently, or you only find one stud within reach for a long board, you will need to add a noggin — covered in the next step. On dot-and-dab, mark through the plasterboard exactly as you would for a stud wall, but plan for a longer fixing that reaches the masonry behind.
AB-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, so use your detector but still assume something could be there. Detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or hidden by a metal stud frame — so drill cautiously and stop immediately if you feel resistance or see a colour change in the dust. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns before you start, so you can cut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
AB-05Fit a noggin if you're on metal studsA metal stud frame alone will not hold a loaded scaffold-board shelf — the fixing can pull straight through the thin steel or plasterboard over time. Cut a small access hole in the plasterboard between two studs, screw in a 45mm x 45mm timber noggin flush with the front face using self-drilling metal-stud screws into the studs either side, then fix your bracket into the centre of the noggin. Patching the plasterboard afterwards is a separate small job — a scrap of plasterboard and some filler will do it. If you'd rather not open the wall, fix through to the masonry behind instead, if there is any.

AB-06Fix each bracket — method depends on your wallSolid brick or block: drill an 8mm hole 50mm deep, insert a red or brown wall plug, and drive a 50-60mm screw. Timber stud: drill a 2mm pilot hole and drive a 60-70mm wood screw into the centre of the stud. Metal stud with a noggin fitted: use 50mm wood screws into the timber noggin. Metal stud with no noggin (light loads only): use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the weight — never a plain wall plug or ordinary wood screw, which will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Dot-and-dab: use a fixing at least 75mm long with a suitable dot-and-dab plug, long enough to pass through the air gap and bite into the masonry behind. Lath and plaster: avoid screwing into the laths alone as they crumble under load — locate the timber studs behind with your detector and fix into those, or use a long toggle fixing rated to span the void.

AB-07Level and tighten the bracketsScrew each bracket up loosely first, then check across the tops with your spirit level and adjust before fully tightening. Tighten each fixing firmly but don't overtighten into plasterboard, as this can crush the board around the fixing.
AB-08Fix the board and test itRest the scaffold board on the brackets and check it sits level and square. Drill a 3mm pilot hole through each bracket's fixing point into the underside of the board to stop it splitting, then drive a 40mm wood screw through each one. Push down firmly on the board along its length to check nothing flexes or moves before you load it properly.

AB-09Tidy upVacuum drill dust from the floor and wall, and wipe down the shelf and brackets. If you cut an access hole for a noggin, patch it with a scrap of plasterboard and filler once you're confident the fixing is solid.
