Put up a scaffold board shelf with pipe brackets on a timber stud wall

Fix pipe brackets into wall studs, level them, then cut, finish and mount a scaffold board shelf safely.

SSH-01Plan the shelf lineDecide the height and length of the shelf, then mark a level line on the wall with a pencil and spirit level. Mark where each pipe bracket will sit along the line, spacing them roughly every 400-600mm depending on the board length. Hold a bracket up at that height to check the finished shelf clears any nearby socket, switch or window sill.

SSH-02Confirm you actually have timber studsRun a stud detector or a magnet along the marked line, tracking screw heads to find the studs, which are normally 400mm or 600mm apart centre to centre. Tap along the wall — a stud sounds solid, the gap between studs sounds hollow. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at the suspected centre: timber dust confirms a timber stud, fine grey metal swarf means it's a metal stud instead. If you find metal studs, don't use a wood screw or a plain plastic wall plug — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Fit a self-drilling metal-stud fixing, or a hollow-wall toggle rated for the shelf's load, and check every bracket point the same way.

SSH-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just the usual safe zones, and a detector can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind foil-backed plasterboard. Before drilling, find your stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you've any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.
SSH-04Mark and drill each bracket positionHold each pipe bracket against its stud and mark the screw hole through it. Drill a pilot hole about 2mm smaller than the screw, roughly 45-50mm deep, at the centre of each stud. If a bracket's position lands between studs, fit a short timber noggin between the studs first, or shift the bracket slightly onto the nearest stud — don't rely on a plasterboard-only fixing for a loaded shelf.

SSH-05Fix the brackets to the studsDrive a No.8 x 60mm wood screw through each bracket fixing hole into the centre of the stud, until the head sits snug. Use at least two screws per bracket, and fit at least two brackets for a board up to about 900mm long, adding a third for anything longer. Check each bracket is tight and doesn't rock before moving on.

SSH-06Level and adjust the bracketsLay the spirit level across the tops of all fitted brackets and check they're level. Loosen and reposition any bracket that's out, then retighten it fully. If one stud sits slightly forward of the others, shim behind the bracket with a thin plywood offcut before tightening.

SSH-07Cut and finish the scaffold boardMeasure and cut the scaffold board to length with a hand saw or circular saw. Sand the cut ends and any rough faces smooth, then wipe away the dust. Apply a coat of clear varnish or Danish oil, working it well into the cut ends, and let it dry fully before fitting.

SSH-08Fit the board onto the bracketsLower the finished board onto the brackets so it overhangs evenly at each end. From underneath, drive a short 25mm screw up through each bracket's top plate into the board so it can't lift or slide off. Check the board is stable and doesn't rock before you load it.

SSH-09Tidy up and finishSweep up sawdust and offcuts, and wipe down the wall and worktop. Wait until the wood finish has fully cured, usually 24 hours, before putting anything on the shelf. Load it gradually and check nothing flexes or pulls away from the wall.
