Put up a scaffold board shelf with pipe brackets on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit a scaffold board shelf on pipe brackets safely into a dot-and-dab wall, checking depth and load before you drill.

AB-01Work out what's really behind your plasterboardTap the wall across the area where you want the shelf. A dot-and-dab wall sounds hollow almost everywhere, but a bradawl or 3mm pilot hole pushed gently through the plasterboard will hit solid brick or block after passing through a gap of roughly 10-50mm. Compare this with a timber stud wall (solid knock every 400-600mm, pilot hole brings out timber dust), a metal stud wall (hollow sound, magnet sticks to the screw line on the track edges, pilot hole brings fine bright steel swarf instead of dust), solid masonry (solid knock everywhere, no gap at all), and lath and plaster (older house, wall feels slightly springy with a hollow 'give' when knocked). This job assumes dot-and-dab: plasterboard stuck to solid masonry behind with adhesive dabs.

AB-02Match the fixing to your wall before you buy anythingA scaffold board shelf with pipe brackets is heavy once loaded, so it needs a fixing that reaches solid material, not just plasterboard. On dot-and-dab, use a long fixing that passes through the plasterboard, through the dab void, and at least 30mm into the masonry behind - a plain wall plug on its own is too short and will pull out. On timber studs, use a wood screw straight into the centre of the stud. On metal studs, use a self-drilling or toggle-type metal-stud fixing - never a plain plastic plug and never an ordinary wood screw, both strip straight through 0.5mm steel; a metal stud will not hold this weight on its own, so add a timber noggin between the studs or fix through to the masonry behind instead. On lath and plaster, treat it like dot-and-dab but expect the void to be deeper and the plaster more fragile - fix into whatever solid material sits behind the laths, or into a joist if you find one.
AB-03Check for cables and pipes, and know how to isolate themCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones. Run a detector over the whole marked area, but still treat every hole as if something could be there - detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or outside the safe zones, and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns before you start. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before drilling anywhere near a pipe run.

AB-04Mark the shelf height and bracket positionsDecide the height of the shelf and draw a level pencil line along the wall using a spirit level - don't trust your eye alone. Mark the fixing centres for each pipe bracket along this line: for a 1200mm scaffold board, use three brackets, one near each end and one in the middle, roughly 550-600mm apart. Hold each bracket against the line and mark through its screw holes with a pencil.

AB-05Drill a test hole to check the depth behind the boardBefore drilling the final fixing holes, drill one small pilot hole (3mm) at a marked point to find out how deep the dab void is - push the bit through gently until it hits solid masonry, then wrap tape around the bit at that depth to measure it. Add the plasterboard thickness (usually 12.5mm) and at least 30mm of masonry embedment to work out the total fixing length you need. Once you know this, drill the actual fixing holes to the size stated on your fixing packet, using a masonry bit and a hammer drill (or drill on hammer setting) for the masonry section.

AB-06Fit the pipe brackets to the wallPush each long fixing through the plasterboard, through the dab void, and into the masonry, then tighten until the bracket sits flat against the wall and doesn't rock. Fit and tighten the top and bottom fixing on the end brackets first, check the line is still level, then fit the middle bracket. Don't overtighten a fixing into masonry - stop as soon as the bracket is firm, or you can crack the plasterboard around the hole.

AB-07Prepare the scaffold boardCut the scaffold board to length with a hand saw or circular saw, then sand the cut end and any rough faces to remove splinters - scaffold boards are untreated and often still have paint marks or nail holes from site use. Wipe off the dust, then finish with a clear wax or danish oil if you want to protect the wood and stop it marking clothes or leaving dust in use. Let the finish dry fully before fitting the board.

AB-08Fit the board onto the bracketsLift the board onto the pipe brackets and check it sits level and square. Most pipe brackets have a clamp or a screw-up fixing underneath the pipe - tighten this, or screw up through the bracket into the underside of the board with short wood screws, taking care not to drill all the way through the top face.

AB-09Check, tighten and tidy upGive the shelf a firm push test before loading it - it shouldn't move or flex at the wall. Check the spirit level again along the top of the board, and snug up any fixing that's still slightly loose. Vacuum up dust and swarf from the floor and wall, and wipe the board down before you put anything on it.
