Put up a shelf with brackets on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit a wall shelf safely by finding what's behind the plaster, checking for cables and pipes, then using the right fixing for your wall.

SH-01Gather tools and mark the rough positionGet everything ready before you start drilling: tape measure, pencil, spirit level, drill, detector, screwdriver, and the shelf and brackets. Decide the height you want and mark a rough centre line on the wall with a pencil. Hold the shelf up first to check it looks right and clears any switches, sockets or door swings.

SH-02Work out exactly what's behind the plasterRun a stud/cable detector across the wall along your marked line. Dot-and-dab plasterboard sounds solid where the adhesive dabs are (usually every 300-450mm) and hollow in between, and a small pilot hole will show plasterboard, then a gap of 10-50mm, then solid masonry behind. If instead you get a hollow sound everywhere and a line of screw heads at 400-600mm spacing, you actually have a stud wall, not dot-and-dab.

SH-03Check if it's actually a timber or metal stud wallIf you found screw heads in a line, hold a magnet against the wall: strong, definite pull usually means a metal stud track; a weaker pull is just the screw itself, and timber is behind it. Drill a tiny 2-3mm pilot hole at a bracket position: pale wood dust means timber studs, fine grey metal swarf means metal studs. Old lath and plaster feels slightly springy and uneven when tapped, and a pilot hole brings out thin wood splinters and crumbly old plaster rather than solid board.

SH-04Mark and level the bracket positionsHold one bracket against the wall at your chosen height and mark its screw holes. Use the spirit level to mark the second bracket at exactly the same height, then double check both marks with the level resting across them. Get this right now — it is much easier to fix twice than to unscrew a loaded shelf later.
SH-05Check for cables and pipes, and know your safety shut-offsBefore you drill any hole, go over every mark again with the detector — cables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the usual safe zones, and a detector can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board. Even after checking, drill slowly and stop the instant you feel resistance or see anything other than plaster dust. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, and if you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near it.
SH-06Drill and fit the right fixing for your wallFor dot-and-dab, drill through the plasterboard and the air gap into the masonry behind — use a long fixing (typically 75-100mm) so it grips at least 25mm into solid brick or block, not just the plasterboard skin. For solid brick or block with no board, drill 7mm with a masonry bit, fit a wall plug, and use a 50-60mm screw. For a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole and drive a 50-65mm wood screw into the centre of the stud. For a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a hollow-wall toggle rated for metal — never a plain plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw, which will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. For lath and plaster, aim to screw into a lath itself with a long screw, or use a plasterboard-rated toggle between laths, and keep loads light as old lath and plaster can be fragile.

SH-07Fix the brackets to the wallScrew each bracket in place through the fixings you've just fitted, tightening evenly rather than fully tightening one side first. Check both brackets with the spirit level again before you fully tighten, since fixings can shift slightly as they bed in.

SH-08Fit the shelf and load test itSit the shelf on the brackets and screw it down from underneath using short screws that won't poke through the top. Push down firmly on each end and in the middle to check it feels solid, with no movement or creaking from the wall. If a fixing feels spongy or the wall flexes, stop, remove it, and refit into solid masonry rather than loading it further.

SH-09Tidy upVacuum up all plaster or masonry dust from the floor and skirting, and wipe down the wall below the shelf. Keep any leftover fixings in a labelled bag — you'll likely need matching ones again for shelf number two.
