Put up a shelf with brackets on a timber stud wall

Fit a straight, secure shelf on brackets, matching the fixing to your exact wall type for a safe hold.

SH-01Choose the right shelf and bracketsPick a shelf board at least 18mm thick so it doesn't bow under weight — 18mm MDF, chipboard or timber is fine for books and ornaments. Use two brackets for a shelf up to about 900mm long, and add a third bracket for anything longer or for heavy loads like a TV box or tinned food. Choose brackets deep enough to support most of the shelf's width, not just the front edge.

SH-02Mark the shelf height and bracket positionsHold a bracket against the wall at the height you want and mark the top of the shelf line lightly in pencil. Use a spirit level to draw a level line across the wall, then measure along it to mark each bracket's fixing holes. Double-check the line is level before you drill anything — a shelf that's even 5mm out over 900mm will look obviously crooked.

SH-03Work out what your wall is made ofTap the wall along your marked line: a dull, solid sound usually means brick or block, while a hollow drum sound means plasterboard on a frame. If it's plasterboard, run a detector or a small magnet along the wall to find the fixings holding the board on — a regular line of screw heads roughly 300-600mm apart tells you where the studs are. Drill a small 3mm test hole in the centre of a suspected stud: fine pale dust means timber, and fine grey metal swarf means you have a metal stud frame, common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s.

SH-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the safe zones, and cheap detectors can miss ones that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or confused by a metal stud frame. Sweep the whole drilling area with a detector, then still drill cautiously and assume something could be there until you've drilled through and proved otherwise. Before you start, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you're at all unsure, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near sockets or lights.

SH-05Fix into solid brick or blockDrill with a masonry bit sized to your plug — typically a 6mm bit for a 6mm plug — to a depth of at least 40mm, a little deeper than the screw and plug together. Push in a plastic wall plug flush with the wall, then drive in a 5x50mm screw through the bracket into the plug. Fit all fixing holes in the bracket, not just one, for a secure hold.

SH-06Fix into a timber studLine the bracket up so the fixing hole sits in the centre of the stud you found earlier, not near its edge. Drill a 3mm pilot hole through the plasterboard and into the timber to stop the screw splitting the wood, then drive a 5x50mm wood screw straight into the stud. Don't rely on the plasterboard alone here — the screw needs to bite into solid timber for a shelf to hold any real weight.

SH-07Fix into a metal studNever use a plain plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw on a metal stud — it will strip straight through the thin 0.5mm steel. Instead use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a hollow-wall toggle anchor rated for the weight, driven with a screwdriver or low-speed drill setting so it doesn't spin out. A metal stud alone won't safely hold anything heavy or anything that pulls away from the wall as it's used, such as a long shelf loaded with tools; for that you need a timber noggin fitted between the studs, or a fixing through to the masonry behind.

SH-08Fix through dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab walls have a gap of 20-50mm of air and adhesive dabs between the plasterboard and the solid masonry behind, so a normal-length fixing won't reach anything solid. Use a long frame fixing or resin anchor, at least 75mm long, drilled through the board and the gap into the brick or block behind, so most of its length grips the masonry, not just the board. Drill slowly and check the fixing feels solid once seated — if it spins freely, you've likely landed in a gap between dabs and need to shift position slightly.

SH-09Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster walls have thin timber laths behind a layer of old plaster, which can crack or crumble if you drill too fast or too hard. Find a lath by drilling a small pilot hole and feeling for solid timber rather than a hollow gap, then use a wood screw into the lath itself, or a hollow-wall toggle fixing if you land between laths. Work slowly, support the plaster around the hole with your free hand, and expect to patch small chips afterwards.

SH-10Screw the brackets to the wallHold each bracket against its marked position and check it's still level before driving the fixings home. Tighten firmly but don't overtighten, especially on plasterboard or plaster, where too much force can crack the surface or crush a toggle. Fit every screw hole in each bracket for the full rated strength.

SH-11Attach the shelf to the bracketsRest the shelf board on top of the brackets and check it overhangs evenly on both sides. Mark and drill small pilot holes up through the bracket's top plate into the underside of the shelf, then fix with short screws so they don't poke through the top surface. Wipe away any dust before fixing so the screws seat cleanly.

SH-12Check the shelf is level and test the loadRun the spirit level along the top of the shelf and adjust if needed before the fixings fully set. Press down firmly on both ends and the middle to check for any flex or movement, and re-tighten any fixing that feels loose. Add items gradually rather than loading it all at once, especially on a plasterboard-only fixing.

SH-13Tidy upVacuum up plaster or timber dust from the floor and skirting, and wipe down the wall below the shelf. Put screws, plugs and offcuts away safely, away from children or pets. Step back and check the shelf looks level and sits flush against the wall before you finish.
