Put up a wall-mounted clothes rail on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Learn to find your wall type safely, then fit and load a wall-mounted clothes rail with the correct fixing for your wall.

CR-01Plan the job and gather your toolsClear the wall area and decide on a height — about 1700-1800mm from the floor works for a single hanging rail, lower if there's a shelf above it. Check the rail kit's fixing centres against the space you've got, and lay out all the parts before you start. Get your tools together so you're not stopping halfway through.

CR-02Work out what's behind your plasterboardTap the wall in a grid and listen: a dull, solid knock everywhere means solid brick or block. A hollow sound that turns solid every 300mm or so is dot-and-dab, where the board sits on adhesive blobs over masonry with a gap behind. A hollow sound with a regular solid line every 400-600mm, where a magnet sticks to screw heads, is a timber or metal stud — a small pilot hole in that line brings out timber dust for wood, or fine grey swarf for metal. An old house with a slightly springy, evenly hollow wall is more likely lath and plaster, with thin timber laths behind rather than a board.

CR-03Fixing into a timber or metal studFor a timber stud, drill a pilot hole into the centre of the stud and use a wood screw long enough to bite at least 30mm into the timber. For a metal stud, never use a wood screw or a plastic wall plug — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel — use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor made for metal studs instead. A metal stud on its own will not hold a loaded clothes rail, because clothes pull it away from the wall every time it's used, so fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to masonry behind if there is any.

CR-04Fixing into solid masonry, dot-and-dab, or lath and plasterIn solid brick or block, drill with a 6mm masonry bit to about 45mm deep, fit a matching wall plug, and use a screw long enough to grip fully in the masonry rather than just the plug. On dot-and-dab, drill through the plasterboard and the air gap behind it into the masonry, using a long fixing — typically 10mm x 90-100mm — so it grips at least 25-30mm into the solid wall past the adhesive dabs, not just the board. On lath and plaster, don't rely on the plaster or laths themselves, as they'll crumble; find the timber studs behind with a detector and fix into those the same way as a timber stud wall.

CR-05Mark and level the bracket positionsHold the rail brackets against the wall at your chosen height and mark the fixing holes with a pencil. Use the spirit level to check the marks line up with each other before you drill — a rail even a few mm out looks obviously wrong. If you're fixing to studs or noggins, check the spacing lines up with them; if fixing to dot-and-dab, check it lines up with a dab line where possible.

CR-06Check for cables and pipes, then drillBefore you drill anything, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. Run a detector over every mark, but treat it as a guide, not a guarantee — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or outside the normal safe zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse cheap detectors further. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before drilling anywhere that could carry water. Once you're confident, drill each mark to the depth and bit size worked out for your wall.

CR-07Fit the fixings and bracketsFit each fixing exactly as its packaging describes — toggles and hollow-wall anchors often need folding or collapsing as you push them through the board. Screw the brackets on firmly, but don't overtighten a plasterboard toggle or you'll crush the board around it. Check every bracket is level and tight before moving on.

CR-08Fit the rail and test the fixingClip or slot the rail into the brackets and check it feels secure. Hang a few heavy coats on it and gently pull down and outward, mimicking real use, before trusting it with a full load. If anything flexes, feels loose, or the wall creaks, take it down and re-fix into a stud or the masonry behind.
CR-09Tidy upVacuum up drilling dust and any plaster or masonry debris, then wipe the wall down. Put spare fixings and screws somewhere you'll find them again, and check the floor for stray bits. Fold away the dust sheet once the area is clear.
