Fit a wall-mounted shoe rack to a metal stud wall

Fit a wall-mounted shoe rack securely, checking what's behind your wall first and using the correct fixings for its type.

SR-01Prepare the jobCheck the shoe rack's fixing points and its maximum load rating, usually printed on the packaging or instructions. Decide where it will go - most racks sit 150-200mm off the floor, clear of doors, skirting and light switches. Lay a dust sheet down to catch drilling debris before you start.

SR-02Find out what's behind the wall and stay safeBefore drilling anywhere, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. Run a cable and pipe detector over the whole marked area, but don't trust it completely - it can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board, and metal stud frames confuse cheap detectors further. If you're at all unsure, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water. While you're at it, work out whether you have timber or metal studs: track a magnet or stud detector along the line of screw heads, listen for the hollow sound between fixing points, and check a small pilot hole - timber brings out pale wood dust, metal brings out fine grey swarf.

SR-03Mark and level the rackHold the rack against the wall at your chosen height and use a spirit level to get it dead level. Mark each fixing hole through the rack's mounting points with a pencil, then check the spacing against any stud positions you found in the last step.

SR-04Fix into solid brick or blockDrill a 6mm hole 40mm deep with a masonry bit at each mark, tap in a red plastic wall plug, then drive in a 40mm screw until it's snug. Don't overtighten - it can crack the surrounding plaster. Repeat for every fixing point, checking the rack stays level as you go.

SR-05Fix into plasterboard on timber studsWhere a mark lands on the centre of a timber stud, drill a small pilot hole then drive a 40mm wood screw straight into the timber - no plug needed. For any fixing point that falls between studs, use a plasterboard toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the rack's loaded weight, never a screw on its own.

SR-06Fix into plasterboard on metal studsA plain wood screw or plastic plug will strip straight through 0.5mm steel, so use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow anchor made for metal studs instead. A metal stud alone won't hold anything heavy, or anything that pulls away from the wall as it's used - if the rack is loaded with shoes and knocked about daily, fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind if there is any.

SR-07Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard has a 20-50mm air gap behind it before you reach solid masonry, so a standard plug grips nothing solid. Use a long fixing - typically 60-75mm - that passes through the board, across the gap, and into the brick or block behind, then drill and plug the masonry as in the solid wall method.

SR-08Fix into lath and plasterOlder houses, often pre-1930s, have lath and plaster instead of plasterboard - thin wooden strips behind a layer of plaster that crumbles if you drill carelessly. Find a solid lath with a bradawl or pilot hole first, then use a shorter screw that grips the lath itself, or a plaster-specific toggle fixing for lighter loads. Avoid heavy loads on lath and plaster - it isn't built to take much strain.

SR-09Mount the rack and check it's secureOnce all fixings are in, give the rack a firm wiggle test in both directions to check nothing shifts. Recheck it's level, and tighten any fixing that feels loose before moving on.

SR-10Load test and tidy upAdd shoes gradually rather than loading the rack fully straight away, checking the fixings hold under real weight. Vacuum up any dust or debris, wipe down the wall, and dispose of packaging and offcuts.
