Put up a wall-mounted wine rack on a timber stud wall

Mount a wine rack safely onto stud wall studs, checking hidden pipes and cables before drilling.

WR-01Plan where the rack will goHold the rack against the wall at a comfortable height, usually 900-1200mm from the floor, and step back to check it looks right. Keep it away from doorframes, worktop edges and corners so bottles clear when you load them. Mark the rough position lightly in pencil.

WR-02Work out what's behind the wallRun a stud detector or a magnet across the marked area to find the line of screw heads holding the plasterboard, which tells you where the studs are. Timber studs sound solid when you knock them and give off pale wood dust from a small pilot hole; metal studs sound the same but a pilot hole brings out fine grey steel swarf instead. If you feel a hard, cold surface with no hollow sound at all, you have solid brick or block, not a stud wall, and need a different fixing entirely. If the wall gives a dull, slightly springy sound everywhere with no clear stud line, it may be dot-and-dab plasterboard on masonry, or old lath and plaster, both of which need longer fixings than a stud wall.

WR-03Check for pipes and cables, and know your isolation pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones' near sockets and switches. Use a detector, but treat its result as a guide, not proof — it can miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and metal studs confuse cheap detectors further. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
WR-04Mark the exact fixing pointsHold the rack's backplate against the wall, level it with a spirit level, and mark through the fixing holes onto the wall. Line these marks up with the centre of a timber stud wherever possible — a screw driven into the edge of a stud can split it or miss it. Double-check the marks are level before you drill, since wine racks show a lean more than most shelves.

WR-05Drill the pilot holesFor a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole straight into the centre of the stud to a depth of about 40mm — this stops the wood splitting and guides the screw in straight. If dust from the hole is pale and fine, you're in timber and can carry on. If it turns out grey and metallic instead, stop — you've found a metal stud, and a wood screw will strip straight through 0.5mm steel with no grip at all.

WR-06Fix the rack to the studsInto timber studs, drive a 4x50mm wood screw through each backplate hole into the pilot hole, using a screwdriver or drill on a low torque setting so you don't overtighten and crack the plasterboard face. If you actually found a metal stud in the last step, swap to a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the rack's loaded weight — never a plain plastic wall plug, which has nothing to grip in thin steel. Fit all fixings before fully tightening any one of them, so the backplate isn't pulled out of line.

WR-07Check it's secure and levelGive the rack a firm downward and outward tug to check it doesn't move or flex away from the wall. Recheck with the spirit level across the top, and load a couple of bottles to see it sits square before adding the rest. If a fixing feels loose or the plasterboard flexes around it, don't load the rack fully — refit that point into a stud or add a hollow-wall toggle rated for the full loaded weight.
WR-08Tidy upVacuum up any drilling dust or swarf from the floor and skirting before it gets trodden through the house. Wipe the wall around the fixings with a damp cloth to remove pencil marks and dust. Put drill bits and fixings away so they're not left lying around.
