Fit a wall-mounted shoe rack to a timber stud wall

Fit a shoe rack to a timber stud wall safely, using the right screws and checking for hidden cables or pipes first.

SR-01Plan the height and mark your fixing lineDecide how high you want the rack and hold it against the wall to check it clears the skirting and any nearby doors. Use a spirit level to draw a level pencil line across the wall at bracket height. Find the studs along this line and mark their centres — most timber studs sit 400mm or 600mm apart.

SR-02Confirm you actually have timber studsRun a stud detector or magnet along your marked line to check for screw heads holding the plasterboard on — a steady, evenly spaced pattern confirms studs. Tap between the marks: a dull thud means solid stud, a hollow sound means you're between them. If you're not sure, drill a small 2mm test hole at a mark — fine pale dust means timber, grey metal swarf means you actually have a metal stud wall, which needs different fixings (see note below).

SR-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones'. Use a detector, but still assume something could be there and drill carefully — detectors miss deep cables, ones in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
SR-04Drill pilot holes into the stud centresDrill a 2mm pilot hole 30mm deep into the centre of each marked stud — this stops the wood splitting and keeps your screw running straight and true. Keep the drill level and square to the wall. Never drill off-centre chasing a stud; if you miss, move the fixing to the next confirmed stud rather than forcing it.

SR-05Screw the brackets to the studsUse 4mm x 50mm wood screws driven straight into the pilot holes, right through the plasterboard and at least 30mm into the timber stud. Don't use plastic wall plugs here — a screw straight into solid timber holds far better. If a fixing point lands between studs with no timber behind it, move it, or fit a timber batten across two studs first rather than relying on plasterboard alone.

SR-06Hang the shoe rack and check it's levelLift the shoe rack onto the fixed brackets and let it settle into place. Check it's level with your spirit level and that it sits flush against the wall with no wobble. If it rocks, check every screw has gone into a stud and not just plasterboard.

SR-07Load test and tidy upAdd a few pairs of shoes and check the rack holds firm with no movement at the brackets. Wipe down the wall to remove pencil marks and dust, and vacuum up any drilling debris from the floor. Keep the fixings and screws that came with the rack in case you need to adjust or refit it later.
