Refix a radiator that's pulling away from a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Isolate the heating safely, work out what's really holding the bracket, then refix it so the radiator stays put.

RAD-01Work out why the bracket is failingLook closely at the top of the bracket where it meets the wall. If the screw has pulled a lump of plaster and dab adhesive out with it, the fixing was only ever in the dot-and-dab layer, not the masonry behind. If the bracket itself is bent or the screw has sheared, the fixing was fine but the hardware has failed. This tells you whether you need a better fixing, a new bracket, or both.
RAD-02Protect the room and get set upLay a dust sheet under the radiator and along the wall. Put an old towel or shallow tray under the valves to catch drips. Get a radiator bleed key, an adjustable spanner and a bucket ready before you touch anything.

RAD-03Turn off the heating and isolate the radiatorTurn the heating off and let the radiator cool fully before you start. Close the lockshield valve and the thermostatic valve on either end using your spanner, turning each fully clockwise. Know where your stopcock is (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if a pipe gets damaged later.
RAD-04Detect for hidden cables and pipes before you drillRun a cable and pipe detector over the wall around the old bracket position, in both directions. Cables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the usual zones, and a detector can still miss ones that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board. Drill slowly and stop the moment you feel resistance or see anything other than dust. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and don't cut into anything that could carry water without the stopcock already off.

RAD-05Work out exactly what's behind the wallTap the wall either side of the old fixing. A dull, slightly springy sound with a hollow ring usually means dot-and-dab plasterboard over solid masonry — most common on outside walls. A hard, solid knock everywhere with no give at all means solid brick or block with no dry lining. If you get a hollow sound but no dab void when you drill (the bit goes straight through board into open air), you may actually have a stud partition wall — check for a magnet catching on screw heads or a stud detector picking up a regular line 400-600mm apart. A shallow pilot hole tells you which: fine plaster dust and then a gritty change to brick or block dust means dot-and-dab; a clean run of pale timber dust means a timber stud; fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud track. Old houses (pre-1930s) with a bouncy, uneven wall and a knocking sound may be lath and plaster — thin wood strips under lime plaster, which crumbles easily and needs extra care.
RAD-06Remove the radiator and old bracketsLift the radiator off its brackets and lay it on the dust sheet, keeping the valve ends up to stop drips. Unscrew the failed bracket and clear away any loose plaster or dab adhesive around the hole. Check the plasterboard itself isn't cracked or crumbling — if it is, you'll need to patch it before refixing.
RAD-07Choose the right fixing for your wallFor dot-and-dab, the fixing must go through the plasterboard and the dab void and bite into the solid masonry behind — a long masonry frame fixing (M8 x 100mm or longer, sized to your measured void) is right; a wall plug that only grips the plasterboard will pull out again under the radiator's weight. For solid brick or block with no dab, a standard 8mm plug and screw at 50-60mm depth is enough. For a timber stud, use a wood screw driven into the centre of the stud. For a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud anchor or hollow-wall toggle rated for the load — never a plain plastic plug or ordinary wood screw, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel. A radiator bracket carries a heavy, awkward load, so if you find a metal stud or thin plasterboard with no solid backing, fit a timber noggin between the studs first or fix through to the masonry behind rather than trusting the stud alone. For lath and plaster, aim the fixing into a lath or the stud behind it, not the crumbly plaster in between.

RAD-08Drill and fit the new fixingsFor dot-and-dab, measure the dab void depth with a length of wire pushed through your test hole, then set your drill's depth stop to reach at least 40mm into the masonry beyond that. Use a masonry bit in a hammer or SDS drill for brick or block, and a standard bit for timber. Fit the plug or anchor, then drive the screw or bolt in until the bracket sits flush and doesn't wobble when you pull it.

RAD-09Refit the brackets and rehang the radiatorFit both brackets at the same height, checking with a spirit level so the radiator doesn't lean. Lift the radiator carefully back onto the brackets and check it sits securely with a firm push from the top edge, not just resting there.

RAD-10Reconnect and refillOpen both valves fully and let the system refill. Bleed the radiator with your key until water runs steadily with no air, then close the bleed valve. Check the valves and the wall fixings for leaks or movement over the next hour with the heating running.

RAD-11Tidy up and do a final checkWipe down the wall and radiator, vacuum up plaster or masonry dust, and fold away the dust sheet. Come back after a day and press firmly on the top of the radiator to confirm the brackets haven't moved.
