Refix a radiator that's pulling away from a timber stud wall

Drain and remove the radiator, work out why the bracket pulled away, then refit it into something solid enough to hold it.

AB-01Turn off the heating and protect the floorTurn off the central heating and let the radiator cool for at least an hour before you touch it. Lay a dust sheet or old towels under the radiator to catch drips and protect the flooring. Get a bowl and your tools ready before you start.

AB-02Isolate and drain the radiatorClose both valves at the base of the radiator by turning them fully clockwise, so no more water can flow in. Put the bowl under one union nut and loosen it slowly with the spanner. Let a litre or two drain out, then nip it back up so it stops dripping while you work.
AB-03Disconnect and lift the radiator off the wallFully undo both union nuts, keeping the bowl underneath to catch any remaining water. Lift the radiator up and towards you to free it from the wall brackets, then rest it on a folded towel on the floor. It's heavier than it looks when full, so get a second pair of hands if you can.
AB-04Check the old bracket to see why it failedLook closely at the old screws and the wall around them. The usual cause is a screw that only went into the plasterboard skin and missed the timber behind it, so the weight of the radiator has slowly pulled it out. If the hole is chewed up and oversized, plan to move the new fixing slightly rather than reuse it.
AB-05Work out if it's really a timber studBefore refitting anything, confirm what's actually behind the plasterboard. Run a stud detector or a magnet across the wall – a magnet catches on the screws fixing the plasterboard to the frame, giving you a line to follow. Tap along the wall: a dull, solid knock usually means a stud, a hollow sound means you're between them. If you need to be sure, drill a small 3mm pilot hole in an out-of-sight spot – timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey metal shavings mean a metal stud, which is common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s.

AB-06Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the safe zones people talk about. Use a detector, but still treat the wall as live until you've proved otherwise – detectors miss deep cables, anything in metal conduit, and cables behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors even more. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and make sure the water's off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
AB-07Remove the old bracket and mark new fixing pointsUnscrew the old bracket from the wall completely. Hold it back up and mark new screw positions lined up with the centre of a solid stud, moving slightly from the old holes if they're damaged. Fill any old stripped holes with wood filler so the new screw has something to bite into if it lands nearby.

AB-08Fit the new bracket – timber studDrill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud at each marked point, going in straight. Fix the bracket with a 5mm x 50mm wood screw at every point that lines up with a stud – don't rely on plasterboard alone to hold a radiator's weight. If a fixing point falls between studs, don't use a plasterboard toggle here; a full radiator is too heavy and pulls too hard as it's used, so get a timber noggin fitted between the studs at that point, or shift the bracket slightly so it lands on the stud instead.

AB-09Fit the new bracket – metal studIf your pilot hole brought out fine metal swarf rather than timber dust, you've got a metal stud wall. Never use a wood screw or plastic wall plug here – it will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Use self-drilling metal-stud screws driven straight into the centre of the stud, no pilot hole needed. A radiator is too heavy and puts too much leverage on a metal stud alone, so get a timber noggin or plywood pattress fixed between the studs behind the bracket, or fix through to any masonry behind the stud wall instead.

AB-10Rehang the radiatorLift the radiator back onto the new brackets, checking it hooks on securely at both ends. Run a spirit level across the top to check it's sitting straight, and nudge the brackets slightly if it isn't.

AB-11Reconnect the pipework and refillReconnect both union nuts by hand, then tighten a further quarter turn with the spanner – don't overtighten, as this can damage the seal. Open both valves fully, then top up the system pressure through the filling loop if you have a combi boiler. Bleed the radiator with the key until water runs out steadily with no air, then close the bleed valve.

AB-12Check for leaks and tidy upTurn the heating back on and let it run for 20-30 minutes. Check both union nuts and the new bracket fixings for any dripping or damp patches. Wipe up any spilled water, take away the dust sheet, and put the old screws and offcuts in the bin.
