Refix a radiator that's pulling away from a metal stud wall

Refit a sagging radiator safely by finding what's behind the wall, isolating water first, and using the right fixing.

RD-01Gather your tools and protect the floorLay a dust sheet under the radiator and along your route to the bucket. Turn off your central heating and let the radiator cool down fully before you touch it - it can hold scalding water. Get everything ready first: spanner, bleed key, bucket, towels, and a torch.

RD-02Find your stopcock and isolate the radiatorBefore you touch any pipework, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely. Close both radiator valves - turn the wheel valve clockwise, and use a spanner on the lockshield valve, counting the turns so you can reopen it the same amount later. If either valve won't close fully, turn the stopcock off instead.
RD-03Drain and remove the radiatorPlace the bucket under the lockshield valve and loosen the nut with a spanner, letting the water drain out slowly and mopping up spills with towels. Once it stops running, undo the other valve connection the same way. Lift the radiator off its wall brackets and rest it on the dust sheet.

RD-04Work out what's behind the wallRun a stud detector or a strong magnet across the wall in a grid, and look for a line of screw heads showing faintly under the paint. Tap the wall: a dull thud usually means a stud or solid masonry, a hollow sound means bare plasterboard between studs. If you're still unsure, drill a small 3mm pilot hole into an old fixing point - pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and brick dust means solid masonry or dot-and-dab.

RD-05Drill and cut into the wall safelyCables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a wall, not just in the usual zones. Sweep the area with your detector, but still treat it as a guide, not a guarantee - it can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and make sure your stopcock is still off before cutting into anything that could carry water. Wear safety glasses throughout.
RD-06Check why the old fixing failedLook closely at the old holes in the wall. Torn plasterboard, a stretched toggle, or a screw that's chewed through thin steel all mean the same thing - the fixing was never strong enough to carry a full, water-filled radiator once it started to sag and pull. A full double radiator can weigh over 20kg dry and much more full, so you need a proper fixing point, not just a bigger version of the one that failed.
RD-07Fit a timber noggin if you have metal studsIf step 4 showed metal studs and there's no solid backing behind the old holes, you'll need to fit a noggin before refixing anything. Cut a neat inspection hole in the plasterboard between the two nearest studs, sized to fit a 100 x 47mm timber noggin horizontally at bracket height. Fix the noggin to each stud with self-drilling metal-stud screws, then screw a plasterboard offcut back over the hole into the noggin and studs, and fill the joints.

RD-08Choose the right fixing for your wallSolid brick or block: drill 7mm holes 40mm deep and insert red or brown wall plugs, then fix the bracket with 50-60mm screws. Plasterboard on timber studs: screw straight into the centre of the stud with 50mm wood screws, no plug needed. Plasterboard on metal studs: once your noggin is fitted (step 7), use 25mm self-drilling metal-stud screws through it - never a plain wall plug or ordinary wood screw, they strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Dot-and-dab plasterboard: use a long fixing, 60-75mm, that passes through the board and adhesive dabs into the masonry behind, not a standard-length plug. Lath and plaster: find the timber studs behind the laths with your detector and use screws long enough to bite well into that timber, not just the thin plaster coat.

RD-09Refit the brackets and hang the radiatorFix both wall brackets level with each other, checking with a spirit level before you tighten fully. Lift the radiator back onto the brackets and check it sits flush against the wall with no rocking. Give the brackets a firm push and pull test before reconnecting anything.

RD-10Reconnect the valves and refillWrap fresh PTFE tape around the valve threads and reconnect both valves by hand, then tighten with a spanner - snug, not overtight. Open the lockshield valve back to the same number of turns you noted earlier, then open the other valve fully.
RD-11Bleed the radiator and check for leaksTurn your heating back on and let the system pressurise. Bleed the radiator with your key once it's warm, holding a cloth under the valve, and stop as soon as water appears. Check both valve connections and the new fixings for any drips over the next hour, and again the next day once the radiator has been through a full heating cycle.
RD-12Patch and make good the wallIf you cut an inspection hole for a noggin, sand the filler smooth once it's fully dry, following the drying time on the tub. Touch up with matching emulsion once the filler is completely dry - painting over damp filler will show through later.

RD-13Final check and tidy upWipe down the radiator and skirting, and check the floor for any missed drips. Remove the dust sheet and dispose of any old wall plugs or screws safely. Keep an eye on the fixing over the next week to make sure it stays solid once the radiator is back up to full temperature.
