Fit a stair handrail to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Plan the height, locate solid support, then fit and test a stair handrail so it's safe to lean on.

SH-01Set the handrail height and mark bracket spacingMeasure the pitch line of the stairs and mark your handrail height on the wall. Plan bracket positions along the run, spacing them no more than 900mm apart, with one close to the top and bottom of the flight.

KNOW THE RULES

Part K of the Building Regulations sets minimum handrail heights, generally 900mm above the pitch line, and says the rail must run the full length of the flight and take a real load. Check your stairs meet this before you fit a new rail, especially in an older house.

SH-02Mark out the bracket line on the wallHold the handrail or a straight batten along your marked height and check it with a spirit level so it follows the pitch of the stairs evenly. Mark each bracket position in pencil, checking none land on a socket, light switch or door frame.

SH-03Work out what your wall is made ofTap the wall along your marked line: a dull, solid knock is brick or block, while a hollow sound in patches with solid spots between is dot-and-dab plasterboard glued to masonry behind. A regular line of screw heads found with a magnet or detector at 400mm or 600mm spacing means a stud wall - a small pilot hole bringing out pale timber dust means timber studs, fine grey swarf means metal studs. Older houses may have lath and plaster instead of plasterboard, which feels uneven and hollow with a thin timber lath just behind the plaster.
SH-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the usual safe zones, so use a detector but still treat every mark as live until you prove otherwise. Detectors can miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, or anything behind metal-backed board, and a metal stud frame will confuse a cheap detector further. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns before you start, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
SH-05Find a solid fixing point behind the wallA handrail takes real load every time someone leans or pulls on it, so never rely on plasterboard alone, even where it feels solid. Drill a small pilot hole at each bracket mark and feel the depth to the masonry behind - on dot-and-dab this is usually 20mm to 50mm of void before you hit brick or block. If a mark lands over an air gap with no dab behind it, shift the bracket sideways by 20mm to 30mm rather than trying to fix across a gap.

SH-06Fit the right fixing for masonry and dot-and-dab wallsOn solid brick or block, drill an 8mm hole at least 50mm deep, fit a red or brown wall plug, then drive an M8 x 80mm coach screw so it bites fully into the masonry. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing at least 100mm to 120mm long, such as a resin sleeve anchor, so it passes through the board and the foam dab and grips the solid masonry behind, not just the plasterboard skin. Never rely on a plasterboard fixing alone here - a handrail takes real pulling force every single time someone uses the stairs.

SH-07Fit the right fixing for stud wallsOn a timber stud wall, drill a pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive an M8 coach screw, or a heavy-duty wood screw at least 60mm long, straight into the timber. On a metal stud wall, a plain plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw will strip straight through the 0.5mm steel and cannot take a handrail's load - self-drilling metal-stud fixings only suit light fittings, so for a handrail fit a timber noggin between the studs first and screw the bracket into that, or fix through to the masonry behind if there is any. On lath and plaster, the laths themselves are thin and brittle, so locate the stud or joist behind by feel and screw into that timber, never into the lath.

SH-08Fit the brackets to the wallWorking from one end of the run to the other, drive each bracket home using the fixing you chose for your wall type. Check each bracket is fully tight and doesn't spin or wobble in the wall before you move on to the next one.

SH-09Attach the handrail to the bracketsRest the handrail in the bracket cradles and check it sits level and follows the stair pitch evenly. Mark the fixing points on the underside of the rail, drill pilot holes, then screw the rail down into each bracket from below, supporting it as you go.

SH-10Check the fit and load-test the railRun a spirit level along the full length of the rail to check it's even. Put your full weight on it in several places, pulling down and outward, before anyone relies on it. If any bracket moves or feels loose, stop, remove it and refit into a solid fixing before the stairs are used again.
SH-11Fill, finish and tidy upFill any gaps around the brackets with decorator's caulk, let it dry, then sand lightly. Touch up paint or varnish to match the surrounding wall and rail, then vacuum up dust and dispose of packaging.
