Plan the height, locate solid support, then fit and test a stair handrail so it's safe to lean on.
Part K of the Building Regulations sets minimum handrail heights, generally 900mm above the pitch line, and says the rail must run the full length of the flight and take a real load. Check your stairs meet this before you fit a new rail, especially in an older house.
