Fit a stair handrail to a lath and plaster wall

Mark, drill, and fix a stair handrail safely, checking your wall type first and testing every fixing point before you rely on it.

AB-01Plan the run and gather your kitMeasure the full length of the stair flight along the pitch. Buy a handrail kit long enough for this, with enough brackets so none are more than 900mm apart and one sits within 150mm of each end. Get a spirit level, tape measure, pencil, detector, drill, screwdriver bits, and a stable step or podium – never a ladder balanced on stair treads.

AB-02Mark the handrail heightDraw an imaginary line touching the nosing (front edge) of each tread – this is the pitch line. Building Regulations Approved Document K gives a handrail height of 900mm to 1000mm above the pitch line, measured vertically. Use a long spirit level and a helper or string line to carry this height consistently up the whole flight.

Approved Document K sets a recommended handrail height of 900–1000mm above the pitch line. Fitting a single handrail to an existing stair doesn't normally need building control involvement, but keep to this height range.

AB-03Mark bracket positionsAlong your height line, mark bracket centres no more than 900mm apart, with one bracket close to the top and one close to the bottom of the run. Check the line is straight and true with the spirit level before you mark anything permanently.
AB-04Work out what's behind the lath and plaster at each markLath and plaster can sit directly on solid brick or block, or on a timber stud partition, and older stairwells sometimes mix both. At each bracket mark, tap gently – a dead, solid sound usually means masonry behind, a hollow sound with a slight give means a timber stud partition. Run your detector along the line looking for a repeating pattern of screw or nail heads, which points to studs.
AB-05Confirm with a test pilot holeDrill a small 3mm pilot hole at one bracket mark. Plaster and lime dust is normal from the lath layer. If you then hit brick dust, you're on solid masonry. If you get timber dust, you're into a stud. Fine grey steel swarf means a metal stud – uncommon behind lath and plaster, but possible in a refitted flat.
AB-06Check for cables and pipes, and know how to shut things offCables and pipes can run anywhere, not just in the usual safe zones, and a detector can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind foil-backed plasterboard. Treat the detector as a warning, not a guarantee. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and know you can shut the water off at the stopcock if you hit a pipe.
AB-07Fix into solid brick or block behind the lath and plasterDrill through the plaster and lath with a masonry bit sized for your plug, then into the brick or block behind to at least 50mm depth. Because lath and plaster is often uneven, use a packer behind the bracket to stop it sitting proud. Fit a heavy-duty wall plug rated for the load, then drive in a coach screw or bracket screw at least 65mm long.

AB-08Fix into a timber stud behind the lath and plasterCentre the pilot hole on the stud, not its edge, so the screw has full timber to bite into. Use a packer to bridge any gap left by uneven lath and plaster, then drive a wood screw or coach screw at least 75mm long into the centre of the stud. Do not rely on the plaster and lath alone to hold any weight.

AB-09Fix into a metal stud, if you find oneA plain plastic plug or ordinary wood screw will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a rated toggle anchor instead. A handrail takes a person's full weight, often pulling away from the wall as they use it, so a metal stud on its own is not enough – find the masonry behind, or fit a timber noggin between the studs, and fix into that instead.

AB-10Fix through dot-and-dab, if the wall has been overboardedIf a previous refit has covered the original lath and plaster with dot-and-dab plasterboard, there's an air gap of 25 to 50mm behind the board before you reach solid masonry. Use a fixing long enough to cross this gap and still get at least 50mm into the masonry – typically 90 to 100mm overall. A short fixing will only grip the dabs and can fail under load.

AB-11Fit the brackets and offer up the railFix each bracket using the method that matches what you found behind it, checking with a spirit level as you go so the run stays true. Offer the handrail up to the brackets, mark it to length, and cut it square. Fix the rail to the brackets with the screws supplied in the kit.

AB-12Load-test and finishLean and pull firmly on the rail at every bracket point, testing as if putting your full weight on it while going up and down. Check nothing flexes, creaks, or moves at the wall. Fill any small gaps around fixings with a matching filler and touch up paint or varnish once dry.

AB-13Tidy upVacuum plaster and masonry dust from the stairs and skirting before it gets trodden through the house. Put fixings and offcuts away, and dispose of any lime plaster dust as normal household waste, not down a sink.
