Fit a stair handrail to a timber stud wall

Fit a secure, code-height handrail to your stair wall, choosing the right fixing for whatever material lies behind it.

SH-01Mark the handrail height and routeMeasure up from each stair nosing and mark the handrail height at both the top and bottom of the flight. Join the two marks with a straight line using a spirit level or chalk line, checking it runs parallel to the stair pitch. This line is where the top edge of your handrail brackets will sit.

Building Regulations Approved Document K sets a minimum handrail height of 900mm (up to 1000mm) above the pitch line on a stair, and requires the rail to run continuously along the flight.

SH-02Work out what's behind the wallRun a stud detector or magnet along the wall at handrail height, tracking a line of screw heads to find stud centres, and note whether the wall sounds hollow or solid when tapped. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and a dead stop after 10-15mm on a solid-sounding wall means brick or block. On dot-and-dab, the drill passes through plasterboard, then air, then hits masonry a little further in. On lath and plaster, expect a thin skim of plaster, then narrow timber laths with gaps between.

SH-03Mark the bracket positionsSpace brackets no more than 900mm apart along the marked line, with one close to the top and one close to the bottom of the flight. Where the wall has timber or metal studs, nudge each mark sideways so it lands on the centre of a stud rather than between them. On solid brick, block, dot-and-dab or lath and plaster, bracket position isn't limited by stud spacing, but keep the spacing even so the finished rail looks straight.

SH-04Check for cables and pipes, and know how to isolate themCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, so scan every fixing point with a detector but still treat each hole as if something could be there. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all about what's behind a fixing point, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill, and don't drill until you're confident it's clear.
SH-05Fit the brackets to the wallUse the fixing that matches the wall behind each mark. Into a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole and drive a wood or coach screw at least 60mm long into the centre of the stud. Into a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud anchor or toggle fixing rated for the load – never a plain plug or wood screw, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel – and remember a handrail takes a pulling, twisting load every time someone grips it, so a metal stud alone isn't enough: fit a timber noggin between the studs at each bracket point, or fix through to solid masonry behind where one exists. Into solid brick or block, drill a 10mm hole to 60mm depth, fit a matching wall plug, and drive in a coach screw. Into dot-and-dab, use a fixing long enough (typically 90mm or more) to pass through the plasterboard, the air gap and the adhesive dabs, reaching solid masonry behind. Into lath and plaster, locate the timber stud or joist behind the laths and screw into solid timber, or fit a noggin behind the laths first – screwing into plaster and laths alone will pull straight out.

SH-06Hang the handrail on the bracketsLift the handrail into the brackets and secure it with the screws supplied with the kit, usually driven up from underneath into the rail. Check the rail is level along its length and sits parallel to the stair pitch, adjusting bracket positions slightly if needed before final tightening. Tighten every fixing fully, working along the flight from one end to the other.

SH-07Test the rail and clear upApply firm downward and outward pressure to the rail at several points along its length, as if someone had tripped and grabbed it hard, and check every bracket stays solid. Sweep or vacuum up dust and drilling debris, then wipe down the rail and wall. Dispose of any offcuts and pack away your tools.
