BM-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillScan the whole area with your detector first, but don't trust it completely — detectors miss cables that are deep, run through metal conduit, sit behind metal-backed plasterboard, or lie outside the usual safe zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
