SP-03Safety check before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just the usual safe zones, and detectors miss cables that are deep, boxed in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board. Sweep the whole fixing line with your detector, then still drill a shallow pilot hole first to prove it's clear before going deeper. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all about what's behind the wall, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and turn off the water at the stopcock before you drill or cut anything further.
