Fit a walk-in shower screen panel to a timber stud wall

Fit a walk-in shower screen safely, checking your wall type first and using the correct fixing for a secure, watertight result.

SS-01Prepare the area and check your kitClear the bath or shower area and lay down a dust sheet. Unpack the shower screen kit and check every part against the instructions — panel, wall channel, floor channel, seals, and fixings. Make sure the shower tray or floor is already fitted, fixed down and level, since the screen depends on it.

SS-02Mark the panel positionMeasure from the edge of the tray to where the wall channel needs to sit and mark this on the wall. Use a spirit level to draw a true vertical line — do not trust the tiles or the wall edge, they are rarely dead plumb. Mark the fixing hole positions along this line using the wall channel as a template.

SS-03Work out what's behind the wallBefore drilling, work out what type of wall you've got. Run a detector over the marked line, then check with a magnet — a strong pull means a metal stud, no pull but a hollow sound between fixed points usually means timber stud or dot-and-dab. Drill one small 3mm pilot hole at a marked point: timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means metal, and a solid, gritty feel with no give means brick or block behind plasterboard (dot-and-dab) or solid masonry. Old houses with a slightly springy wall and thin cracks in the plaster are often lath and plaster.

SS-04Do your safety checks before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a bathroom wall, not just in the usual zones — a detector can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry it.
SS-05Fix the wall channel — solid brick or blockDrill through the tile and into the masonry using a 6mm masonry bit, going 5mm deeper than the length of the wall plug. Clear the dust from the hole, push in a 6mm wall plug flush with the surface, then screw the channel in place with a 50mm screw at each marked point.

SS-06Fix the wall channel — plasterboard on timber studsFix every point of the channel into the centre of a timber stud where possible — never rely on plasterboard alone for a shower screen, it takes constant pulling as the door opens and closes. Drill a 3mm pilot hole into the stud centre, then drive a 50mm wood screw through the channel and board into the timber.

SS-07Fix the wall channel — plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — it will strip straight through the thin steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load. A shower screen door pulls on its fixings every time it opens, so if the metal studs feel thin or flexy, it's worth fitting a timber noggin or metal pattress between the studs first, or fixing through to solid backing if there is one.

SS-08Fix the wall channel — dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab has a gap of plaster adhesive dabs between the board and the masonry behind, so a normal screw length won't reach solid backing. Use a long fixing, typically 75-90mm, that passes through the board, the adhesive gap, and into the masonry by at least 30mm. Drill with a 6mm masonry bit once through the board, fit a wall plug into the masonry, then screw the channel down firmly but without crushing the board.

SS-09Fix the wall channel — lath and plasterOld lath and plaster is brittle and can crack if you overtighten a screw. Find the timber studs behind the laths using the same pilot-hole check, then screw into the stud centre with a 50mm wood screw, going slowly. If a hole feels soft or crumbly with no timber behind, move the fixing point rather than force it.

SS-10Fit and seal the floor channelRun a thin bead of silicone along the underside of the floor channel before placing it on the tray upstand — this stops water tracking underneath. Check it sits level with a spirit level, then screw it down following the wall type method you used above for the wall channel.

SS-11Fit the glass panel into the channelsLift the glass panel carefully into the floor channel first, then swing it up into the wall channel. Check it's plumb with your spirit level, then tighten the clamping screws evenly along the channel — don't fully tighten one end before the other, or the glass can bind.

SS-12Fit seals and any support barPress the magnetic or wipe seal strips onto the panel edges as shown in the instructions. If your kit includes a support bar or bracket, fit it now and check the door swings freely without catching on the frame or tray.
SS-13Seal all the jointsRun a neat, continuous bead of sanitary silicone along the wall channel edge, the floor channel edge, and any gap between the glass and the tray. Smooth each bead with a wet finger or a sealant tool. Leave it to cure for the time stated on the tube, usually 24 hours, before using the shower.

SS-14Test and tidy upGently push and pull the panel to check none of the fixings move. Open and close the door fully to check it swings cleanly and seals shut. Wipe away any excess sealant, clear away packaging and offcuts, and remove the dust sheet.
