Fit garage wall shelving to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Plan, mark, and fix garage shelving safely and level, choosing the right fixing for your specific wall before you drill.

AB-01Plan the layout and gather your toolsDecide where the shelves will go and how much weight they need to hold — tools and paint tins are heavier than boxes of decorations. Measure the wall and mark roughly where each bracket will sit before you touch a drill. Clear the floor below the work area so you have room to move the stepladder and drop tools safely.

AB-02Work out what your wall is actually made ofKnock the wall from top to bottom. A dull, solid sound all the way up means solid brick or block. A hollow sound with a slight give under your knuckle means dot-and-dab plasterboard fixed onto masonry behind — very common on garage walls that back onto the house. A hollow, drum-like sound with no give at all usually means a stud partition wall. Lath and plaster is very unlikely in a garage, so you can rule it out.

AB-03If it's a stud wall, work out timber or metalRun your detector or magnet along the wall — both timber and metal studs have screw heads roughly every 300-600mm holding the plasterboard on, and a magnet will pull onto them. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at one of these marks, somewhere out of sight. Timber dust means a timber stud. Fine grey metal swarf means a lightweight steel stud, common in anything built or refitted since the 1990s.

AB-04Mark bracket positions and check they're levelHold a spirit level against the wall and draw a level pencil line at your chosen shelf height — never eyeball this. Mark each bracket position along the line, spacing them no more than 600mm apart for light loads, or 400mm apart for tools and heavy stock. Use a strip of masking tape over each drill point so the drill doesn't wander on a painted or plastered surface.

AB-05Check for cables and pipes, and know how to stop themCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones' — a detector helps but can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board, and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors even more. Sweep the whole drilling area with your detector, then still drill as if something might be there. Before you start, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can cut the water instantly if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
AB-06Fix brackets to solid brick or blockDrill with a masonry bit sized to your wall plug — typically 8mm for a plug taking a 6mm screw — to a depth of at least 50mm. Use a hammer or SDS drill on slow speed for block, and take it steady on old brick to avoid cracking the face. Push the plug fully in, then drive a 6 x 60mm screw through the bracket into the plug.

AB-07Fix brackets to dot-and-dab plasterboardThe plasterboard sits on blobs of adhesive with a gap of 10-50mm behind it before you reach solid masonry — a normal wall plug in the plasterboard alone will not hold shelving weight and will pull straight out. Use a long fixing, such as a 7.5mm x 92mm frame fixing, drilled through the board and the gap into the masonry behind. Drill through, push the fixing right through to the masonry, then tighten so the bracket pulls in firmly against the board.

AB-08Fix brackets to a timber stud partitionWhere a bracket lands on a stud centre, drill a 3mm pilot hole and drive a 5mm x 75mm wood screw straight into the middle of the timber. Where a bracket falls between studs, use a hollow-wall toggle fixing rated for the shelf load rather than fixing into plasterboard alone. For a run of heavy garage shelving, it's worth fitting a timber noggin between the studs first so every bracket has solid timber to bite into.

AB-09Fix brackets to a metal stud partitionNever use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — it strips straight through 0.5mm steel and gives no grip at all. Use a self-drilling metal-stud screw for a direct fix into the steel, or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for steel studs when fixing between them. A metal stud alone will not hold anything heavy or anything that pulls away from the wall as it's used, so for real garage shelving loads, fit a timber noggin between the studs or fix through to masonry behind if there is any.

AB-10Fit the shelf boards and check everything is levelWith all brackets fixed and tight, lay the shelf boards across them and check with the spirit level along the front edge. Adjust or shim slightly if one bracket sits fractionally out. Screw up through each bracket into the underside of the board so the shelf can't be knocked off in use.

AB-11Load test and tidy upLoad the shelf gradually, checking for any movement, creaking, or the bracket pulling away from the wall before adding full weight. Sweep or vacuum up dust and screw swarf from the floor. Put fixings, offcuts, and tools away, and dispose of packaging.
