Fit a picture rail to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Mark a level line, work out what's behind the wall, then fix a picture rail firmly using the right method for each section.

PR-01Decide the height and mark a level linePicture rail usually sits between 1700mm and 2000mm above the floor, but you can set it lower as a design feature. Mark the height on one wall, then use a spirit level to carry a level pencil line all the way round the room, including across corners. A chalk line or laser level makes this faster in a big room.

PR-02Work out what's behind the wall along the whole runOne room often mixes wall types, so check every stretch, not just one spot. Run a detector or magnet along the line looking for a regular pattern of screw heads (studs) or nothing at all (masonry or dot-and-dab). Tap every 300mm: a dead solid knock is brick or block, a hollow knock that gives slightly is dot-and-dab, and a hollow knock with a slight give plus a faint ridge every 25mm or so is lath and plaster. Drill a small 3mm test hole at a few points and check what comes out: reddish dust is brick, pale grey powder is block or plaster, curly shavings are timber, fine grey swarf is metal stud.

PR-03Check for cables and pipes, and know your shut-offs, before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the usual safe zones, and a detector can miss deep cables, armoured cable, or anything behind metal-backed board. Metal stud frames also confuse cheap detectors. Before you drill anything, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all near a socket or switch, isolate that circuit at the consumer unit first, and always assume something is there even after checking with a detector.
PR-04Mark your fixing points along the lineMark a fixing point roughly every 400mm to 600mm, and always within 50mm of each corner, so the rail can't sag or pull away once pictures are hanging from it. On stud walls, mark the centre of every stud you found in step 2. On dot-and-dab, tap gently to find the solid dabs (usually in vertical strips roughly every 300mm) and mark those.

PR-05Fix into solid brick or blockDrill a 6mm hole to 45–50mm deep using a masonry bit, blow out the dust, and push in a wall plug. Drive a 50mm woodscrew through the rail into the plug until it's snug. Don't overtighten, or you'll crush the plug and lose grip.

PR-06Fix through dot-and-dab into the masonry behindDot-and-dab plasterboard is glued to the wall with blobs of adhesive, leaving air gaps of up to 40mm behind the board. A plasterboard-only fixing won't take the pull of a rail with pictures hanging off it, so you need a fixing long enough to pass through the board and the gap and bite into the masonry — typically 75mm. Drill a pilot hole first and feel for the gap; if the drill sails through with no resistance for a while, you've missed a dab, so shift your fixing point sideways a little and try again.

PR-07Fix into timber studsConfirm the stud centre with your marks from step 2, then drill a 3mm pilot hole to stop the screw splitting the timber. Drive a 40mm woodscrew through the rail straight into the middle of the stud.

PR-08Fix into metal studsOnce you've confirmed metal (fine grey swarf from the pilot hole), use self-drilling metal-stud screws straight through the rail into the stud track — no pilot hole, no plug, and never an ordinary woodscrew, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel. Between studs, where you're only fixing to the plasterboard, use a toggle-type hollow-wall fixing rated for the load. A metal stud alone will not hold heavy frames or anything that tugs at the wall; if the rail needs to carry a lot of weight, fit a timber noggin between the studs first or fix through to the masonry behind.

PR-09Fix into lath and plasterOld lath and plaster is thin timber strips under a lime plaster coat, and a fixing that only grips the plaster will crack it. Wherever possible, locate a timber stud or noggin behind the laths and screw into that. Where there's no timber, use a spring-toggle fixing made for lath and plaster, which spans the laths rather than gripping the crumbly plaster coat, and drill slowly to avoid shattering the old plaster around the hole.

PR-10Cut the lengths and mitre the cornersMeasure each wall run along your level line and cut the picture rail to length. Cut internal corners and external corners at 45° using your mitre saw, then dry-fit each piece against the wall before you commit to fixing anything.

PR-11Fix the rail to the wallStarting at one corner, hold the length up to your marked line and true it with the spirit level. Transfer your fixing points from the wall onto the rail, then fix at each point using the method for that section of wall from steps 5 to 9. Get a helper to support long lengths, or prop them with battens, while you work along fixing.
PR-12Fill, caulk and paintFill screw holes and mitre gaps with wood filler, let it dry, then sand flush. Run a bead of decorator's caulk along the top and bottom edge where the rail meets the wall to close any small gaps. Once dry, prime bare wood and paint to match your walls or woodwork.

PR-13Tidy upVacuum plaster and wood dust off the floor and skirting, and wipe down the wall below the rail. Bag up offcuts and packaging, and put your tools away once everything's dry.
