Fit a picture rail to a solid brick or block wall

Fit a level picture rail around a room, cutting neat mitres and fixing it securely without drilling blind into hidden cables or pipes.

PR-01Plan the height and order the railDecide the height — traditionally 300-450mm below the cornice or ceiling, or around 1.8-2m if you want to hang pictures on hooks below it. Measure each wall run and add 10% extra length for mitred corners and waste. Buy picture rail moulding, matching mitred corner blocks if you'd rather not cut internal corners by hand.

PR-02Mark a level line all round the roomSet a laser level or use a long spirit level and straightedge to mark your chosen height on every wall. Check the line lands at the same height where walls meet in corners — rooms are rarely perfectly square, so small adjustments near doors and windows are normal. Mark screw positions along the line roughly every 400-500mm as you go.
PR-03Check what each wall is made of before you fix anythingDon't assume the whole room is one wall type. Tap along the line — solid brick or block sounds dull and hard everywhere. A hollow sound between firmer points usually means a stud wall behind plasterboard; use a detector and follow the line of screw heads to find the studs, and check whether it's timber or metal (a magnet will stick to metal studs, and a small pilot hole brings out timber dust or fine steel swarf). If the plasterboard sounds hollow but you can't find regular studs, and there's a gap of 20-50mm before it feels solid, it's likely dot-and-dab over masonry. In older houses, a slightly springy, uneven surface can mean lath and plaster.
PR-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the usual safe zones, and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors further. Run a detector along your whole marked line, but still treat every hole as if something could be there — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
PR-05Cut and mitre the rail lengthsCut internal corners at 45° using a mitre saw or mitre block, checking the angle against the actual corner if the room isn't perfectly square. Dry-fit each piece against the wall before cutting the next, working round the room in one direction so small errors don't stack up. Number the pieces lightly in pencil on the back so you know which wall each one belongs to.

PR-06Fix into solid brick or block wallsDrill through the rail's marked screw positions into the masonry using a 5-6mm masonry bit sized to your wall plug, going in 5mm deeper than the plug length. Insert wall plugs and drive 40-50mm screws into the centre of each hole, snugging the rail flush without overtightening and cracking the plaster. Space fixings every 400-500mm and always within 50mm of each mitred end.

PR-07Fix into a timber stud wallIf a wall along your line is timber studs behind plasterboard, mark the stud centres you found earlier and drill a 2mm pilot hole into the middle of each stud before driving the screw — this stops the timber splitting. Use 40-50mm wood screws driven straight into the stud, never at an angle, and never rely on the plasterboard alone to hold a fixing. If a screw position falls between studs, use a plasterboard toggle fixing there instead, rated for the weight of the rail.

PR-08Fix into a metal stud wallMetal studs are common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s. Never use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw here — it will strip straight through the 0.5mm steel. Use self-drilling metal-stud screws directly into the stud, and metal-stud hollow-wall anchors or toggle fixings for any point that falls between studs. A picture rail is light, but if you're also hanging heavy framed pieces from it later, don't rely on metal studs alone for real weight — fix through to the masonry behind or fit a timber noggin first.

PR-09Fix through dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard is stuck to the masonry with adhesive dabs, leaving a gap of roughly 20-50mm behind the board. Drill a test hole first to find the gap and confirm the depth to solid masonry. Use a long fixing — typically a 75mm frame fixing or a masonry screw with a matching sleeve — that passes through the board, bridges the void, and grips at least 30mm into the brick or block behind.

PR-10Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster is older and more fragile than plasterboard, and it can crack if you drill into it carelessly. Find the timber studs or joists behind it with a detector, and drill a small pilot hole first to confirm you've hit solid timber rather than a lath gap. Use 40-50mm screws driven into the studs, and go slowly — plaster keys can crumble around a fixing driven too fast.

PR-11Fit each length and check it's levelOffer up each cut length, screw it home at your marked points, and check with a spirit level as you go — small dips are easier to correct one screw at a time than after the whole run is fixed. Push mitred corners together firmly before driving the final screws either side of the joint. Wipe off any pencil marks still visible on the finished face.
PR-12Fill, sand and finishFill screw holes and any gaps at mitred corners with a flexible decorator's caulk or fine wood filler, then sand smooth once dry. Wipe down the whole rail to remove dust, then paint or varnish to match your skirting or woodwork. Leave the final coat to dry fully before hanging anything from it.

PR-13Tidy upVacuum masonry dust and offcuts from the floor and skirting before it gets trodden in. Wipe down windowsills and surfaces nearby, and dispose of packaging from fixings and offcuts of moulding. Store any leftover screws and plugs together in a labelled bag in case you need to add a fixing later.
